MATERIALS:
J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 3 balls of any color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 9.
12 inches of millinery wire.

Gauge: 9 d c make 1 inch; 6 rnds make 1 inch.

Starting at tip of crown, ch 4. 1st rnd: 13 d c in 4th ch from hook. Join with sl st to 3rd st of turning ch. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, * thread over, insert hook in same place where ch-3 started and draw loop through. Repeat from * 2 more times, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (1 group made). ** Ch 1, group in next d c. Repeat from ** around (14 groups). Join with sl st. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, 2 d c in ch-1 sp (increase), * d c in tip of next group, 2 d c in next ch-1 sp. Repeat from * around, ending with d c in tip of last group (43 d c, counting ch-3 as 1 d c). Join. 4th rnd: Ch 3, group where ch-3 started, ch 1, skip 1 d c; group in each of next 2 d c, with ch-1 between; * skip 1 d c, group in each of next 4 d c, with ch-1 between. Repeat from * around (34 groups). Join. 5th rnd: Ch 3, d c in tip of group, * d c in next ch-1, d c in tip of next group. Repeat from * around. Join. 6th rnd: Repeat 4th rnd. 7th rnd: * D c in tip of group, d c in next ch-1 sp, d c in tip of next group, skip next group and ch-1 sp. Repeat from * around. Join. 8th rnd: Same as 4th rnd. 9th, 10th and 11th rnds: Repeat 7th, 8th and 7th rnds. 12th rnd: Same as 4th rnd, but skip 1 d c after every 2 groups made. Continue in this manner until piece measures 6¾ inches in diameter. On next rnd, work in pattern without increasing, but omit each ch-1 between each group. Following rnd: Ch 3, d c in each group around. Join. Repeat the last 2 rnds alternately for 6 more inches. Fasten off.

Feather … Double wire. Work a row of s c closely together over wire. Ch 1, turn. Make s c in each s c for 1½ inches. * Ch 12, turn. S c in 3rd ch from hook, s c in each of next 9 ch, s c in each of next 2 s c of foundation. Repeat from * across foundation. Continue in this manner along opposite side of foundation to within 1½ inches from end of row. Then work s c in each s c to end of this side. Fasten off.

Finishing … Make 2 deep tucks on right side, graduating them to nothing at center front and back. Sew feather on left side at desired angle. Steam and pull into shape. Allow to dry thoroughly.
