The edgings shown on these pages were all crocheted of "Silkine" Crochet Cotton in size 50, with a No. 14 steel crochet hook. However, any of the following threads may be used, depending on the use the worker wishes for the finished piece, and the number of hook mentioned is the most practical. With "Silkine" Pearl Cotton No. 3 use a No. 5 hook; with size 5, use a No. 6 hook. With Star Crochet Cord use a No. 5 hook. With "Silkateen-Sansilk" use a No. 8 steel hook. These threads come in many attractive colors and tones, so the edgings may fit in with the existing color scheme. Gem Mercerized Crochet Cotton is also lovely. Gem or De Luxe Ready-Shrunk Mercerized Cotton is appropriate when coarser edgings are desired. With this use a No. 7 hook.
Turn the narrowest possible hem on edge of cloth and baste. Draw 1 or more threads at base of hem. Join thread and working over hem into drawn band, make 2 sc every 4 to 6 threads. This divides the threads into groups, giving the appearance of hemstitching. Fasten off. Join to start of work and make 1 sc in next 24 sc, * ch 3, turn, sk last sc, 1 tr in next 3 sc, (ch 3, turn, sk last tr, 1 tr in next 3) twice, ch 13, 1 sc in 5th st from hook for a 5-ch p, ch 6, a 5-ch p, ch 2, turn work right-side-up, sk 7 sc to right of tr-group, 1 sl st in next, (ch 6, p) twice, ch 2, 1 sl st in 7th st of ch from last tr, ch 13, p, (ch 6, p) twice, ch 2, sk next 7 sc on heading row, 1 sl st in next, (ch 6, p) 3 times, ch 2, 1 sl st in 7th st of ch from last p-loop, ** ch 30, a clones knot of 16 loops over ch, ch 1, 1 tr in 3rd st of ch from knot, 13 tr over ch, 3 tr over ch worked into a cluster, 3 tr over ch, *** (a 2 tr cluster) 3 times over ch, 1 tr over same ch and 1 tr at base of next p-loop worked into a cluster, (a 2 tr cluster) twice over next 6-ch, 3 tr over same ch, 1 tr at base of next p-loop, 7 tr over next 6-ch, 1 tr in next 4 tr, ch 3, turn, sk last tr, 3 tr, (ch 2, sk 2 tr, 1 tr in next) 11 times, ch 2, sk next 2 tr, 1 tr under ch next to knot, ch 6, turn, a knot over ch, ch 1, (2 tr over next 2-ch, 1 tr in next tr) 3 times, (a 2 tr cluster over next 2-ch, 1 tr in, next tr) twice.
