The edgings shown on these pages were all crocheted of "Silkine" Crochet Cotton in size 50, with a No. 14 steel crochet hook. However, any of the following threads may be used, depending on the use the worker wishes for the finished piece, and the number of hook mentioned is the most practical. With "Silkine" Pearl Cotton No. 3 use a No. 5 hook; with size 5, use a No. 6 hook. With Star Crochet Cord use a No. 5 hook. With "Silkateen-Sansilk" use a No. 8 steel hook. These threads come in many attractive colors and tones, so the edgings may fit in with the existing color scheme. Gem Mercerized Crochet Cotton is also lovely. Gem or De Luxe Ready-Shrunk Mercerized Cotton is appropriate when coarser edgings are desired. With this use a No. 7 hook.
Medallions: Wind thread 15 times around end of hook, sl off and cover r with 16 sc, 1 sl st in 1st sc, (ch 5, 1 sc in next sc) 16 times. Fasten off. Make another rosette and j to 1st as follows: In place of last 5-ch loop, ch 3, 1 sl st in a loop of 1st rosette, ch 3, 1 sl st in next sc, and fasten off. Make 4 more rosettes and j all 6 into a circle, leaving 5 unattached loops on each rosette between j on inside of circle. Join these to middle loop of the 5 loops on 1 rosette, ch 6, (1 d tr in middle loop of next rosette) 5 times, 1 sl st in 1st d tr and fasten off. Make enough medallions for required length, j by 1 rosette on each side of each. Heading rows: Join to 1st rosette at top of 1st medallion to 3rd 5-ch loop, ch 20, sk 2 loops, 1 tr in next, * ch 14, 1 tr in 4th loop of next rosette, ch 12, sk 2 loops, 1 tr tr in next, ch 1, 1 tr tr in 3rd loop of next rosette of next medallion, ch 12, sk 2 loops, 1 tr in next. Repeat from *. Fasten off. 2nd row: Join to 8th st of 20-ch at start of last row, ch 3, 1 tr in next 2 sts, * (ch 2, sk 2, 1 tr in next) 3 times, 1 tr in next 4 sts, (ch 2, sk 2, 1 tr in next 2 sts) 3 times, 1 tr in next 3 sts, (ch 2, sk 2, 1 tr in next) 3 times, 1 tr in next 6 sts. Repeat from *. Work the heading rows on the 2nd side of the medallions to make a matching insertion.
