Snowflake Doily Pattern

Doily measures 10 x 11½ inches.

MATERIALS:

J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, Size 30:

J. & P. Coats—1 ball of White, Ecru or any color, or

Clark's O.N.T.—2 balls of White, Ecru or any color.

Steel Crochet Hook No. 10 or 11.

Doily is made of individual motifs which are sewn together and then enclosed in a border.

Gauge: Each motif measures about 2 inches across.

Motif ... Starting at center, ch 5. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 7 (to count as tr and ch 3), make 5 tr in ring with ch-3 between. Sl st in 4th st of ch-7. 2nd rnd: Sl st in sp, ch 4, tr in same sp, * ch 4, sl st in tr just made, 2 tr in same sp, ch 4, 2 tr in next sp. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1, dc in 4th st of ch-4 first made. 3rd rnd: Sl st in sp, ch 4, 4 tr in same sp, * ch 7, 5 tr in next sp. Repeat from * around. Join. 4th rnd: (Work only in the back loop of tr's.) Ch 4, tr in next 4 tr, * tr in next ch, ch 4, skip 2 ch, in next ch make sl st, ch 4 and sl st (p made), ch 4, skip 2 ch, tr in next ch, tr in next 5 tr. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 4, skip 2 ch, tr in next ch, sl st in 4th st of ch-4 first made. Fasten off.

     Make 13 more motifs same as this.

     Arrange motifs, having a row of 2 motifs, a row of 3 motifs, a center row of 4 motifs, another row of 3 and another row of 2 motifs (see illustration). Sew corresponding solid sections of adjacent motifs neatly with over-and-over sts, on wrong side.

Edging 1st rnd: Attach thread to center joining of the 2 end motifs, ch 8, tr in next p, ch 4, tr in next tr, (ch 4, skip 2 tr, tr in next tr) twice; ch 4, tr in next p, ch 4, tr in next tr, ch 4 and continue in this manner, making tr and ch-4's alternately around, always making tr at join­ings. Join last ch-4 to 4th st of ch-8. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Sl st to center of next sp, ch 8, (tr in next sp, ch 4) 6 times; tr in next tr, (ch 4, tr in next sp) 7 times; (tr in next sp, ch 4) 5 times; tr in next tr, (ch 4, tr in next sp) 5 times; (tr in next sp, ch 4) 7 times; tr in next tr. This com­pletes one quarter of rnd, work remaining three quarters to cor­respond. Join with sl st in 4th st of starting chain. 4th rnd: Sl st in sp, ch 4, in same sp make tr, ch 2, sl st in last tr (p made) and 2 tr, * ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 5, in next sp make 2 tr, p and 2 tr. Re­peat from * around. Join and fasten off.

     Starch lightly and block to measurement.
