Irish Colleen

MATERIALS - D•M•C Pearl Cotton, Art. 116D, Size 8: 2 balls Snow White, 1 ball Green No. 911 or 912 or 701.
4-inch ribbon; ½ yard for Petticoat.
7 or 8-inch Doll.
Steel Crochet Hook, Size 7.

GAUGE: 10 dc=1 inches
9 dc rows = 2 inches

BODICE-With Green, ch 37, 1 dc, in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 33 chs. Rows 2, 3 and 4-Ch 3 (=1 dc), turn, 1 dc in 2nd dc, 1 dc in each remaining dc, 1 dc in 3rd ch of turning ch. Fasten off. Shoulder-With Green, make a loop on hook, working on wrong side of row 4, work 1 dc in 11th dc, 1 dc in each of next 5 dc (leaving remaining 19 dc free). Row 2-Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd dc, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc. Rows 3 and 4-Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, 1 dc in 3rd ch of turning ch (6 sts). Leaving 8 inches of thread, fasten off and sew to 6 end sts of row 4 of Bodice (leaving 4 sts free for armhole). Skip 3 sts on row 4 of Bodice and work other Shoulder to correspond.

SLEEVES-With Green, work 1 dc in 2nd dc of underarm, ch 1, skip next dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, * work [1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1] around post of next Shoulder dc, [1 dc, ch 1] in top of same dc just used; rpt from STAR 3 times, join (with slip st) in first dc (14 sps in rnd). Rnd 2-Skip joined st, slip st in next sp, ch 4, work [1 dc, ch 1] in each remaining sp, join in 3rd ch of ch-4. Rnd 3-Skip joined st, slip st in first sp, ch 4, skip next sp, * 1 dc in next sp, ch 1, skip next sp; rpt from STAR around, join in 3rd ch of ch-4, fasten off.

PEPLUM-With Green, working along lower edge of Bodice, work 1 sc in each st on other side of foundation ch (35 sc in row). Row 2-Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc across. Row 3 (right side)-Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in front loop of first sc, * skip next sc, a Shell of 9 dc in front loop of next sc, skip next sc, 1 sc in front loop of each of next 2 sc (thus leaving back loops free for later use); rpt from STAR across, ending with 1 sc. Fasten off.

SKIRT-From right side, with White, working in free loops of row 3 of Peplum, work 2 dc in each st to last st, 3 dc in last st, to join Skirt, ch 3, slip st in top of first dc. Rnd 2-Ch 1, 1 sc in joined dc, * ch 5, 1 sc in next dc; rpt from STAR around, to join, ch 5, 1 sc in 2nd ch of ch-3, ch 2, 1 dc in first sc. Rnd 3-Ch 1, 1 sc in joining sp, * ch 5, 1 sc in next sp; rpt from STAR around, to join, ch 2, 1 dc in first sc, Rpt rnd 3 five times. Rnd 9-Ch 1, 1 sc in joining sp, * ch 7, 1 sc in next sp; rpt from STAR around, to join, ch 3, 1 tr in first sc. Rpt rnd 9 eight times. Rpt rnd 9 four more times only ch 8 instead of ch-7. Fasten off. Rnd 22-With Green, work 1 sc in any sp, * [a Shell of 2 dc, ch 4, 1 sc in 4th ch from hook (Picot made), 2 dc] all in next sc, 1 sc in next sp; rpt from STAR around, ending with Shell, join in first sc, fasten off.

SHAMROCK (Make 28)-With Green, make a loop on hook, ch 4, 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 3, slip st in same ch just used, * ch 3, 1 dc in same ch just used, ch 3, slip st in same ch just used; rpt from STAR twice, leave 7 inches of thread to sew, fasten off. Sew Shamrocks in place on dress as shown on page 8.

HAT-With Green, ch 4, join into ring, ch 1, work 12 sc in ring, do not join. Rnd 2-2 sc in back loop of each of next 12 sc. Rnd 3-1 sc in back loop of each of next 24 sc. Rpt rnd 3 three times. Rnd 7-* 2 sc in back loop of next sc, 1 sc in back loop of next sc; rpt from STAR eleven times (36 sc in rnd). Rnd 8-1 sc in back loop of each of next 36 sc. Rpt. rnd 8 four times.

BRIM-Rnd 1-Slip stitch in back loop of each of next 36 sc (leaving front loops free for later use). Rnd 2-1 sc in free front loops of each of 36 sc just used. Rnd 3-2 sc in each of next 36 sc. Rnds 4 and 5-1 sc in each of next 72 sc. Rnd 6-Slip st in each st around, fasten off. Dent crown of Hat and trim with ¼-inch green ribbon bow as shown. To dress Doll, see page 15. Make cane of pipe cleaner with ¼-inch ribbon bow and cement to hand as shown.
