Men's Crocheted Slippers Pattern

Directions are given for Small Size. Changes for Medium and Large Sizes are in parentheses.

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply ("Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 8 ozs. of No. 651 Field Green.

Crochet Hook Size E.

GAUGE: 5 sc = 1 inch; 5 rows = 1 inch.

UPPER ... Starting at center of instep, ch 21 (23, 25). 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across making 3 sc in last ch for toe end; working along op­posite side of starting chain, sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. NOTE: Pick up back loop only throughout. 2nd row (right side): Sc in each sc, increasing 1 sc in each sc of the 3-sc group—to inc 1 sc, make 2 sc in 1 sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in each sc, increasing 3 sc evenly spaced around the toe end. Ch 1, turn. Next 4 rows: Decreas­ing 1 sc at both ends and shaping toe end as before, sc in each sc—to dec 1 sc, draw up a loop in each of next 2 sc, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook. Ch 1, turn. 8th row: Decreasing 1 sc at both ends of row, sc in each sc. Ch 1, turn. Place a marker at both ends of last row. Next 10 rows: Sc in each sc. Ch 1, turn. Do not turn at end of last row.

SIDE ... 1st row: Sc in each end st of the last 11 rows to the marker. Ch 4 for cuff, turn. 2nd row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 ch, now working through both loops throughout, sc in next 11 sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 3rd row until side measures 5½ (6, 6½) inches, or when placed on foot reaches center back of heel. Break off and fasten.

Opposite Side: 1st row: Attach yarn to same place as first marker of the com­pleted side, sc closely across the top edge of instep to next marker, ch 4 for oppo­site side of cuff, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 ch, sc in the end st of the last 11 rows of the instep. Ch 1, turn. Now work to correspond with other side leaving a 10-inch strand at end of last row. With wrong side facing and starting at one marker, sc closely around cuff to 2nd marker. Break off and fasten. Re­move markers. Sew center back seam. Fold cuff to outside and sew long edges in place leaving front edges open.

CORD ... Using 2 strands of yarn, make a chain 32 inches long. Break off and fasten. Starting 1½ inches down from top edge of instep, draw cord in through the 3rd row, out through the 6th row, through the cuff openings, then through the instep rows to correspond with other side of instep. Knot each end. Tie in a bow.

SOLE (make 2) ... Starting at heel, ch 5. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd through 5th rows: Increasing 1 sc at both ends, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 6th row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Next 7 (8, 9) rows: Repeat 6th row. Following row: Decreas­ing 1 sc at both ends, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Next 5 rows: Repeat 6th row. Following row: Repeat 2nd row. Next 4 (5, 6) rows: Repeat 6th row. Following row: Repeat 2nd row. Now work even until total length is 9 (9½, 10) inches or when placed against the foot is 1½ inches shorter than sole of foot. Next row: De­creasing 1 sc at both ends, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat last 2 rows twice more. Break off and fasten. Hold­ing both soles together and working through both thicknesses, sc closely around the entire edge. Break off and fasten. Sew top to sole.
