Ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring. Ch 3. Row 1—Work 11 d c in ring (the ch 3 at beginning of row forms one st which makes 12 d c in all), join with a sl st. Row 2—Ch 3, work 2 d c in each st (24 d c), join with a sl st. Row 3—Ch 3, work 2 d c in each st (48 d c), join with a sl st. Row 4—Ch 3, work 1 d c in first st, * 2 d c in next st, 1 d c in each of next 2 sts, repeat from * ending with 1 d c in last st (64 sts), join with a sl st. Row 5—Ch 3, 2 d c in the ch 3 of previous row, ch 2, 3 d c in same st, * skip 3 sts, 3 d c in next st, ch 2, 3 d c in same st, repeat from * (16 shells), join with a sl st. Row 6—* Ch 3, 3 d c over the ch 2 of previous row, ch 2, 3 d c in same ch 2 space, ch 3, 1 s c between 2 shells of previous row; repeat from * ending ch 3, 1 s c between shells of previous row. Row 7—Repeat Row 6. Row 8—* Ch 7, sl st into center of ch at points of shell of previous row; repeat from * for one row. Row 9—* 1 d c in each of first 10 sts, 2 d c in next st; repeat from *, join with a sl st. Row 10—Ch 3, repeat Row 9. Row 11—Repeat Row 5. Row 12—* Work 3 d c over the ch 2 of previous row, ch 2, 3 d c in same ch 2 space; repeat from *, join with a sl st. Row 13—Repeat Row 6. Row 14—Repeat Row 6 working 4 d c, ch 2, 4 d c over the ch 2 space instead of 3 d c.

GUSSET—Fold bag in half, then work gusset as follows: start­ing at lower edge (be sure to have a shell at base of fold) join last shell to first st of next shell, ch 1, turn. Row 1—4 d c, ch 2, 4 d c in ch 2 of row below, ch 1, 1 s c in ch 2 of previous shell, ch 2, 1 s c in 2nd st of same shell, ch 1, turn. Row 2—Work shell pattern in ch 2 of row below, ch 1, 1 s c in ch 2 of opposite shell, ch 2, 1 s c in 2nd st from hook, ch 1, turn. Row 3—Work shell pattern in ch 2 of row below, ch 1, work 1 s c in 2nd st from last s c worked in that shell, ch 2, 1 s c in 2nd st of next shell, ch 1, turn. Continue working shell pattern from side to side in this manner until 8 shell patterns have been made in all, working 5 d c, ch 2, 5 d c in last shell.

Work gusset on other side to correspond.
