CENTER SQUARE—Ch 3, join with a sl st to form a ring. Row 1—Ch 1, work 6 s c in ring, join with a sl st in the ch 1. Row 2—Ch 1, turn. Taking back loop only, work 1 s c in the sl st of previous row, * 3 s c in next st, 1 s c in next st; repeat from * twice, ending with 1 s c in next st and 1 s c into the ch st. Row 3—Ch 1, turn, work 1 s c into each of the first 4 sts, 3 s c in next st (always increase in the center st of the 3 s c group of previous row), * 1 s c in each of next 3 s c, 3 s c in next st, repeat from * once, ending with 1 s c in each of next 4 s c and 1 s c in the ch 1 (there will always be 2 more sts at the end of every row than there are between increases). Continue working as described above, increasing at each corner, until square measures 7¼ in. across from point to point. Then work as follows:

SIDES—Starting at lower point (see illustration), ch 4, turn, * work 1 d c in each of the next 5 sts, 1 popcorn in next st as follows: 5 d c in one st, remove hook, insert it into the first of the 5 d c just made, draw loop through; repeat from * to next corner, 3 d c in center st of corner, complete row to top point to correspond. Ch 2, turn, work 1 s c in 2nd st, taking back loop only, 1 s c in each of remaining sts, working 3 s c in the center st of side point, omitting last decrease. Continue in the above manner, decreasing 1 st at each end on every row and increasing on point, working a popcorn row every 6th row, until 2 popcorn rows have been made. Work 5 rows of s c, fasten off. Work other side to correspond. Make a corresponding piece.

GUSSET—Ch 7, work 1 s c in each st. Work back and forth in s c (taking back loop only), until piece is long enough to fit three sides of bag. Join gusset to bag with a row of sl st. Fold in gusset at top.
Work 1 row of s c around entire top edge.
