LILY DOUBLE QUICK Mercerized Crochet Cotton, Art. 50: 2½ skeins Aqua and 2 skeins each Canary Yellow and Gold, for 1 Place Mat; 4 skeins Aqua and 3 skeins each Canary Yellow and Gold, for 1 Seat Cover.

No. 3 Steel Crochet Hook. Foam rubber chair pads.

PLACE MAT (13 x 21 inches): Starting at one long side with Aqua, make a chain 20 inches long, working slightly looser than usual.

ROW 1: Sc in 2d ch from hook and in each ch across until row measures 18 inches, with number of sc divisible by 3. Mark this row as right side of Mat.

ROW 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. Drop Aqua, draw Yellow thru lp, turn.

ROW 3: Working firmly, sc in 1st sc, long sc over next sc, inserting hook under sc in 2d row below, (sc in next 2 sc, long sc over next sc) repeated across, ending with sc in end sc.

ROW 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st 3 sc, (long sc over next sc, sc in next 2 sc) repeated across.

ROW 5: Repeat Row 4.

ROW 6: Drop Yellow, draw Gold thru lp, turn and repeat Row 3.

ROW 7: Ch 1, turn, (sc in 2 sc, long sc over next sc) repeated across; end with 3 sc.

ROW 8: Repeat Row 7.

ROWS 9 thru 11: Drop Gold, bring Aqua up from pre­vious Aqua band and draw thru lp. Always join each new color in turn in this way. Turn and repeat Rows 3, 4 & 5.

ROWS 12 thru 14: Drop Aqua, join Yellow, turn and re­peat Rows 3, 7 & 8.

ROWS 15 thru 17: Drop Yellow, join Gold, turn and re­peat Rows 3, 4 & 5.

ROWS 18 thru 20: Drop Gold, join Aqua, turn and re­peat Rows 3, 7 & 8. Drop Aqua, join Yellow, turn. Re­peat Rows 3 thru 20 for 12½ inches, ending with a Gold band. Fasten off Gold and Yellow.

NEXT ROW: Join Aqua, turn, sc in 1st sc, (long sc over next sc, sc at base of next sc, sc in next sc) repeated across; sc in end sc.

BORDER: RND 1: Ch 1, 2 sc in same end sc, * (sc in end of next 2 rows, sc in next 2 rows worked off as 1 sc) repeated across end, 3 sc in corner st, sc in each st across long side, 3 sc in corner st; repeat from * around; end with sc in same place with 1st 2 sc, join to 1st sc.

RND 2: * (Ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc) repeated across end to corner, sc in each sc across long side; repeat from * around; join and fasten off.

FRINGE: Wind Aqua around cardboard 2½ inches wide. Cut at one edge. Double 3 strands, insert hook from un­derneath in 1st ch-1 sp at one end, draw loop thru, draw loose ends thru lp on hook and pull tight. Tie fringe in each ch-1 sp on each end of Mat. Trim evenly 1 inch long. Stretch and pin Mat right-side-down in true shape. Steam and press dry thru a cloth.

CHAIR PAD COVER (13½ x 15 inches): Starting at front edge with Aqua, make an 18-inch chain.

ROW 1: Repeat Row 1 of Place Mat for 14½ inches, with number of sc divisible by 3. Mark this row as right side of Cover. Continue as for Mat for about 4 inches (thru 4th Gold band). In 1st row of next Aqua band, work off the 1st 2 sts as 1 st; work in pattern across, making last 2 sts as 1 st (1 sc decreased at each end of row). Continue working in pattern until piece measures 13 inches, decreasing 1 sc at each end of 1st Aqua row in every other Aqua band (5 decreases total on each side). End with a Gold band. Make final Aqua row as for Mat and repeat Rnd 1 of Border. Fasten off. Make a 2d piece.

SIDE BAND: With Aqua, ch 6.

ROW 1: Sk 1 ch, sc in next 5 ch.

ROW 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in 5 sc. Repeat Row 2 until long enough to fit around edge of Seat. Fasten off. Sew ends tog.

EDGE: Work sc around both sides of Band. Sew Band to one side, insert rubber chair pad and sew other side in place.

CORD: Cut 6 strands of Aqua 72 inches long, twist tightly, then double and twist in opposite direction. Tie a strand tightly on loose end. Make 2 cords. Sew center of one on each back corner for ties.
