MATERIALS:

CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, Size 20:
Small Ball:
Clark's O.N.T.—9 balls of White or Ecru.
or
J. & P. Coats—6 balls of White or Ecru.
Big Ball:
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats—4 balls of White or Ecru.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 9 or 10.

The above materials are sufficient for Divan Head Rest and Chair Back.

GAUGE: 7 ch-1 sps make 1 inch.

DIVAN HEAD REST … Starting at lower edge, make a chain about 1 yard long (13 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: D c in 6th ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, d c in next ch. Repeat from * across until 202 sps in all are made. Cut off remaining ch. Ch 4 (to count as d c, and ch-1), turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: * D c in next d c, ch 1. Repeat from * across, ending with d c in 2nd st of turning ch. Ch 4 to turn, but ch 3 to turn at end of 4th row. 5th row: Tr in next d c, ch 4, d c in last tr (a cross st made); * ch 3, thread over 3 times, skip 1 d c, insert hook in next d c and draw loop through; thread over and draw through 2 loops twice, thread over, insert hook in next d c and draw loop through; thread over and draw through 2 loops 4 times, ch 1, d c in center of cross (thus completing a cross st). Repeat from * across, ending with last leg of last cross st in 2nd st of turning ch. Ch 4, turn. 6th row: D c in ch-1 sp of cross st, * ch 5, into ch-1 sp of next cross st make d c, ch 1 and d c. Repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn.
   7th row: D c in ch-1 sp, * ch 4; make s c under the chains of previous 2 rows, picking up both chains at once; ch 4, into next ch-1 sp make d c, ch 1 and d c. Repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn.
   8th row: D c in ch-1 sp, * ch 3, into next ch-1 sp make d c, ch 1 and d c. Repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn. 9th row: D c in next d c, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, d c in next ch, ch 1, d c in next d c, ch 1, d c in next d c. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 1, d c in 2nd st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Repeat 5th to 9th rows incl. for pattern until piece measures about 11½ inches, ending with 9th row. Ch 4, turn. Do not break off, but work a row of ch-1 sps around all 4 sides, working d c into each d c along the 2 long sides, and d c into end of each row along 2 short sides, making d c, ch 4 and d c at corners. Join last ch-4 with sl st to 3rd st of turning ch. Now work another row of sps over sps, but make a ch-4 picot after every 3rd d c across each long side. Block to measurements given.

CHAIR BACK … Starting at lower edge, make a chain about 20 inches long (13 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: D c in 6th ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, d c in next ch. Repeat from * across until 103 sps in all are made. Cut off remaining chain. Now work in pattern as for divan head rest until piece measures about 11½ inches, ending with 9th row of pattern. Then finish all 4 sides as for divan head rest. Block to measurements given.
