Four Star Chair Set Pattern #7375

MATERIALS:
CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS PEARL COTTON, size 5, 18 balls of main color, 3 balls of color A, and 2 balls of color B.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 6 or 7.
J. & P. Coats Bias Trim, to match color B.
Cotton batting.
1 yard of any material.

GAUGE: 10 sts make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch (1 square is equivalent to 3 d c).

To Change Color: Before drawing through last 2 loops of last d c of one color-group, drop this color, pick up second color, thread over and draw through the 2 loops on hook. Continue with 2nd color according to chart, carrying the dropped color along top of previous row and working over it to conceal it.

CHAIR SEAT … Starting at front edge, with main color ch 128. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across (126 d c, counting turning ch as 1 d c). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: 2 d c in same place where ch-3 was started (2 d c increased), d c in 53 d c. Then, holding color B along top of previous row and working over it to conceal it, with main color make d c in 3 d c, leaving the last 2 loops of last d c on hook. Drop main color, pick up color B and draw through last 2 loops, thus changing color in last d c of main-color group. With color B, make d c in 3 d c, carrying main color concealed in d c's and changing color in last d c of color-B group. With main color make d c in 6 d c, carrying color B and changing color in last d c of main-color group. With color B make d c in 3 d c, carrying main color and changing color as before. With main color make d c in each d c across, dropping color B after carrying it for 3 sts and ending row with 3 d c in 3rd st of turning ch (2 sts increased). There are 130 sts. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: 2 d c in same place where ch-3 was started, d c in 16 d c. Then, holding color A along top of previous row, with main color make d c in 3 d c (thus concealing color A), changing color in last d c of main-color group. With color A make d c in 9 d c, carrying main color and changing color in last d c of group as before. With main color make d c in 30 d c, dropping color A after carrying it for 3 sts and concealing color B in last 3 sts of main-color group. With color B, working over main, make 3 d c; with main working over color B, make 6 d c; with color B make 3 d c. With main color make d c in 27 d c, dropping color B after carrying it for 3 sts. Then, holding color A (2nd ball) along top of previous row, with main color make d c in 3 d c, changing color in last d c. With color A make d c in 9 d c, changing color as before. With main color make d c in each d c, increasing 2 d c at end of row (134 sts). Ch 3, turn. Continue in this manner (starting with 4th row of chart), changing color as indicated by symbols on chart, and increasing 2 d c at both ends of each row until there are 162 d c in the row. Now work without increasing, following chart to top, but when work reaches the shaping at top of chart, dec. 2 d c at both ends of each row until 126 d c remain—to dec., work off 2 d c as 1 d c twice. Fasten off. Make another piece same as this, using main color only.
Block pieces. Cut 2 thicknesses of any material to same shape as crocheted pieces. Sew the 2 pieces of material together, leaving an opening. After filling with cotton batting, sew up opening (finished pad should be slightly smaller than crocheted pieces). Place wrong side of crocheted pieces together and baste edges, leaving an opening of 12 inches at top. Then bind basted edges with bias binding; also bind both edges of opening. Insert pad and sew edges of opening together. Sew two 8-inch lengths of bias binding at each corner of top edge, for ties (stitch raw edges together).

CHAIR BACK … Starting at lower edge, with main color ch 104. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across (102 d c, counting turning ch as 1 d c). Ch 3, turn. Hereafter follow chart for chair back, increasing as for chair seat until there are 138 d c in row. When work reaches shaping at top, dec. 2 sts at both ends of each row until 102 d c remain. Fasten off. Make another piece same as this, using main color only.

Block pieces. Finish as for chair seat.
