MATERIALS:
For best results use—
CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, Size 30:
Small Ball:
Clark's O.N.T.—6 balls of White or Ecru, or 9 balls of any color.
or
J. & P. Coats—5 balls of White or Ecru, or 6 balls of any color.
Big Ball:
Clark's O.N.T.—3 balls of White or Ecru.
or
J. & P. Coats—3 balls of White, Ecru or any color.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 9 or 10.

GAUGE: 4 sps make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

Chair Back: about 12 x 15 inches
Arm Pieces: about 8 x 11 inches

CHAIR BACK… Starting at bottom, make a chain about 20 inches long (16 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: Tr in 11th ch from hook, (ch 3, skip 3 ch, tr in next ch) 3 times—4 sps made. * Tr in next 4 ch—1 bl made. Ch 3, skip 3 ch, tr in next ch—another sp made. Repeat from * across until 27 bls in all have been made. Then make 4 sps. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 7, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Tr in next tr, (ch 3, tr in next tr) 3 times; tr in next 4 tr—bl made over bl; ch 3, tr in next tr—sp made over sp. Continue working bl over bl and sp over sp across, making last tr in 4th st of turning ch. Ch 7 to turn, but ch 4 to turn at end of 4th row. 5th row: Make (3 tr in sp, tr in next tr) 4 times—4 bls made over 4 sps. Ch 3, skip 3 tr, tr in next tr—sp made over bl. Make another sp, (1 bl, 3 sps) 12 times; then make 1 bl, 2 sps and 4 bls, making last tr in 4th st of turning ch. Ch 7, turn.
   Starting at "X", follow chart for 6th to 15th rows incl. 16th row: 10 sps, 3 bls, 1 sp, 7 bls, 5 sps, then ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next ch, ch 1, tr in next tr—a shadow sp made over sp. Make 2 more shadow sps, 5 sps, 3 shadow sps, and follow chart for remainder of row. Ch 4, turn. 17th row: 4 bls, 9 sps, 2 bls, 2 sps, 2 bls, 3 sps, 2 shadow sps, then (ch 1, tr in next tr) twice—shadow sp made over shadow sp. Make 3 more shadow sps, 3 sps, 6 shadow sps, and follow chart for remainder of row. Continue to follow chart until 22nd row is completed. 23rd row: 5 bls, 6 sps, 2 bls, 2 sps, 1 bl, 5 sps, then ch 3, skip 1 tr, tr in next tr—sp made over shadow sp. Make 4 bls, and follow chart for remainder of row. Starting with 24th row, follow chart to top. Fasten off.

ARM PIECES … Starting at bottom, ch 131. 1st row: Tr in 11th ch from hook, (ch 3, skip 3 ch, tr in next ch) twice. * Tr in next ch—bl made. Ch 3, skip 3 ch, tr in next ch—sp made. Repeat from * across until 13 bls in all are made; then make 3 sps. Ch 7, turn and follow chart to top. Fasten off.
