Pink and Maroon Hat and Bag Set Pattern #PC-1251

MATERIALS:
J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 6 balls of Indian Pink and 4 balls of Maroon.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 1.
¾ yard buckram.
¾ yard lining material.
1½ yards veiling.
4 round buttons.

Use a triple thread throughout entire set.

SKULL CAP … Starting at center, with Pink ch 4. Join. 1st rnd: 8 sc in ring. 2nd rnd: In each sc around make sc and dc. 3rd rnd: * Dc in sc, sc in dc. Repeat from * around. 4th rnd: Sc in each st around, increasing 2 sts wherever necessary to keep work flat—to inc 2 sts, make 2 sts in 1 st twice. The last 2 rows constitute pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 5 inches in diameter.
Now work in pattern without increasing until piece measures 3½ inches from center. Mark the end of rnd with a safety pin and continue to work in pattern across until row measures 6 inches from pin mark. Turn. Work over these 6 inches only, decreasing 2 sts at both ends of every row until 3 sts remain (this is back of Skull Cap)—to dec 2 sts, work off 2 sts as 1 st twice. Break off.

CROWN … With Pink, make a chain 14 inches long. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: * Sc in 1st sc, dc in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with dc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately, increasing in every 5th st around on next row and every 4th row thereafter until piece measures 4 inches deep. Break off.
Place Skull Cap on head. Then drape the Crown in a circular manner to suit individual taste. Pin Crown in place on Skull Cap. Remove Hat and sew securely in place.

FLOWER (Make 3) … With Maroon ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 3rd rnd: Sc in each sc around. 4th rnd: Sc in each sc, increasing wherever necessary to keep work flat.
Repeat the 4th rnd until piece measures 3 inches in diameter. Break off. Pin Flowers in place and sew to Hat (see illustration).

HEAD STRAP … With Maroon, ch 5. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Repeat the 2nd row until Strap measures 15 inches. Pin each end of this Strap to each wrong side of Hat. Try Hat on and adjust strap to fit head. Break off and sew in place. Sew veiling to suit individual taste.

BAG

SIDE (Make 2) … With Maroon, ch 27. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: * Sc in next sc, dc in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with dc. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Dc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately until piece measures 15 inches long. Break off.

CENTER … With Pink, ch 27. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: * Sc in next sc, dc in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with dc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in each st across. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 4th row until row measures 7½ inches (piece should measure 7½ inches deep). This completes one half of center. Work other half to correspond, decreasing instead of increasing for other half. When completed, piece should measure 15 inches.

FLAP … With Maroon, make a chain 9 inches long and work exactly as for Sides for 3 inches. Do not break off but make sc in next 3 sc, ch 8, skip 6 sts, sc in next 3 sts, ch 8, skip 6 sts, sc in next 6 sts, (ch 8, skip 6 sts, sc in next 3 sts) twice—4 buttonloops made. Ch 1, turn. Next row: Sc in next 3 sc, then work sc closely over chain loop, keeping work flat. Continue thus across row. Break off.

BUTTON (Make 4) … With Maroon, ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 3rd rnd: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. 4th rnd: Sc in each sc, increasing if necessary to keep work flat.
Work 2 rnds without increasing. Insert button into this piece and dec every other sc until all sts are worked off.
Sew one side of Bag to each side of Center. Fold in half and, 3 inches up from bottom at center of each side, make a tuck 3 inches long, graduating it from nothing to 1¼ inches deep, then carry tuck around bottom and graduate it into nothing at 3 inches from bottom on other side. Line each piece with buckram and lining material. Sew up side seams. Place Flap at center top of one side. Sew buttons on opposite side to correspond with buttonloops. Tack the 2 top edges together securely next to each edge of Flap.
