MATERIALS:
J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 7 balls.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 1.
2 yards of velvet ribbon.
4 dozen velvet buttons.
½ yard lining material.
¼ yard buckram.

Use a triple thread throughout entire set.

HAT

GAUGE: 5 sts make 1 inch; 6 rows make 1 inch.
Starting at bottom of center back, ch 17 to measure 3½ inches. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * dc in next ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across, ending with dc. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: * Sc in 1st dc, dc in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with a dc. Ch 1, turn.
Repeat the 2nd row, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 5th row 4 times in all—to inc 1 st, make 2 sts in 1 st. Work without increasing until piece measures 5¾ inches in all. Do not turn after the last row but make a chain the length of one side (5¾ inches). Drop this thread. Attach 3 more threads to first st of last row and make a chain exactly the same length as chain just made. Break off. Pick up the threads at end of first chain, turn. Work in pattern across chain, across last row and across to other end of chain. Continue in pattern for 2½ more inches. Now dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until piece measures 4½ inches from last chains made—to dec 1 st, work off 2 sts as 1 st. Divide row into 3 equal sections and mark with safety pins.
First Scallop … On next row, dec 1 st, work in pattern across row to first pin mark, turn. Work over this section only, decreasing 1 st at both ends of each row until 9 sts remain. Break off. Make 2 more scallops to correspond. Press through a damp cloth. Sew the two 5¾ inch starting chains to each side of center back. Make 2 velvet bows and sew on each side of center scallop. Sew on velvet buttons at regular intervals. Line if desired.

BAG

SIDE (Make 2) … Starting at center, ch 4. Join. 1st rnd: 8 sc in ring. 2nd rnd: In each sc around make sc and dc. 3rd rnd: * Dc in next sc, sc in next dc. Repeat from * around. 4th rnd: * Sc in next dc, dc in next sc. Repeat from * around, increasing 2 sts wherever necessary to keep work flat—to inc 2 sts, make sc and dc in each of 2 sts until piece measures 9½ inches in diameter. Mark end of round with a safety pin. Continue in pattern until row measures 7½ inches from pin mark, turn. Work back and forth over this 7½ inches only for 2½ more inches (this is top of Bag). Break off.

GUSSET … Ch 3. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next ch. Now work in pattern as for Hat, increasing 1 st at both ends of every other row until row measures 2 inches. Work without increasing until piece measures 8¼ inches in all. This completes one half of Gusset. Work other half to correspond, making decreases in place of increases until 2 sts remain. Break off.
Line Gusset with buckram. Place Gusset between sides, having center of Gusset in line with center bottom of Bag. Sew Gusset in place and sew up sides. Line Bag with lining material.

BEADING (Make 2) … Ch 34 to measure about 7 inches. D tr in 6th ch from hook and in each ch across. Break off. Sew a beading to center of each side of Bag at beginning of 7½-inch width.

DRAWSTRING … Make a chain 41 inches long. Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Break off.
Run end of Drawstring through beading on both sides of Bag, picking up 2 d tr and passing over 2 d tr alternately across. Then run Drawstring through the two headings again, passing over the d tr picked up on previous row and going under the d tr which was passed over. Sew ends of Drawstring securely together. Sew on buttons as desired.
