Linen Center with Crocheted Edge Pattern

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet Size 30 White or Boilfast colors. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 10 or 11. Linen for centers.

Doilies may be made any size desired. The crocheted edge is about 2 inches wide when made with size 30, but would be broader and equally effective in coarser sizes. Or, if preferred, use Pearl Cotton, size 5, or Clark's O.N.T. Cronita, or J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen.

Cut a round of linen the desired size, and finish with a rolled or tiny hem. 1st rnd: Attach thread and make tr in edge over rolled hem, ch 1, and repeat around, arranging spacing to keep work flat. Total amount of tr must be evenly divisible by 6. Join. 2nd rnd: Sl st to 1st ch, ch 9, * skip 2 tr of preceding rnd and make d tr (thread over 3 times) over next ch-1. Ch 1, d tr over next ch-1, ch 1, d tr over next ch-1, ch 1, d tr in tr, ch 4, and repeat from *. Join with sl st to 5th st of starting ch.

3rd rnd: Ch 9, * d tr over ch-1 of preceding rnd, ch 1, d tr over next ch-1, ch 1, d tr over next ch-1, d tr over ch-4 loop, ch 4, d tr in d tr, ch 4, and repeat from *. Remaining three rnds are worked in same way with the following changes: 4th rnd: Ch 10 to start, with ch-5 between instead of ch-4. 5th rnd: Ch 11 to start and make ch-5 between. 6th rnd: Ch 14 to start, and ch-9 between.
