Square Doily with Crochet Inset Pattern

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercer­ized Crochet Size 30. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 9. 10 inch square of white linen or larger if desired.

Center: To begin, ch 57, turn, d tr (thread over 3 times) in 17th ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1, d tr in next, ch 1, skip 1, d tr in next, ch 5, skip 5, d tr in next, repeat from * to end of row. (Large sp at end, 5 large sps in all in row.)

2nd row: Turn, ch 8 (to count as 1st d c and ch-5). * Make 1 d c in d tr, ch 1, d c in d tr, ch 1, d c in d tr, ch 5, and repeat from * to end of row. 3rd row: Turn, ch 8, and repeat 2nd row. 4th row: Turn, ch 10, * d tr in d c, ch 1, d tr in d c, ch 1, d tr in d c, ch 5, and repeat from * to end of row. Repeat 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows in succession until there are 13 rows in all (last row to be d tr). Do not fasten off thread. This completes the center part of crocheted inset. Then work around this as follows: 1st rnd: Ch 16 (to count as d tr, and ch-11), d tr in st where ch started, * ch 5, d tr in junction of d tr and ch, ch 3, skip junction of d c and ch, and make d tr in junction of next d c and ch. Repeat from * around (9 sps along each side of square) with 2 d tr in each corner and ch-11 between. Join with sl st to 6th st of ch-16 first made.

2nd rnd: Ch 11, d tr in 5th st of corner square, ch 11, d tr in same st, ch 5, d tr in next d tr, ch 5, d tr in next ch-3, d tr in next, and repeat around making d tr in d tr, ch 3 over ch-3, and ch 5 over ch-5, in­creasing at the corners. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 11, and work same as 2nd rnd. Insert medallion in center of linen square, cut away fabric underneath and whip in place.

Edging: 1st rnd: Turn edge of material in tiny hem and press down. Attach thread (not at corner) and work over hem as follows: 1 tr in edge, ch 1, and re­peat around, leaving a tiny sp between each st in the linen. Make 4 tr with ch-1 between each in the corners. Join with sl st. 2nd rnd: Then 1 sl st to ch-1 first made in previous rnd, ch 6 (to count as d tr and ch-1), * d tr over next ch-1, ch 6, skip 2 tr with ch-1 between of preceding rnd, d tr over next ch-1, ch 1, and repeat from *. Join.
