Young One's Delight Hat Pattern

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY The Famous "PURITAN" STAR SPANGLED MERCERIZED CROCHET COTTON, Article 40
4 balls Silver Spangle for Hat.
1 ball each Green Spangle and Red Spangle for trim
- or -
"STAR" FAST HEAVY CROCHET MERCERIZED COTTON, Article 140
2 balls White for Hat.
1 ball each Red and Emerald Green for trim.
¾ yd. hat wire.
Steel crochet hook No. 1.

If "Star" Fast Heavy Crochet Mercerized Cotton is used, work entire set with a single strand of thread. If The Famous "Puritan" Star Spangled Mercerized Crochet Cotton is used, work entire set with a double strand of thread.

HAT

With Silver Spangle or White ch 2, 6 s c in 2nd st from hook, do not join this or following rounds. Place a marker at beginning of each round.

2nd Round: 2 s c in each s c.

3rd Round: * 1 s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around.

4th Round: * 1 s c in each of the next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around.

5th Round: Working in s c, increase 6 s c evenly spaced but do not place increases directly over increases of previous round. Repeat the last round until crown measures 6 inches in diameter.

Work even until crown measures 5 ¾ inches from center of crown (starting point) or length desired to fit head, sl st in next st to even round, ch 1, turn.

START BRIM: Skip the sl st, * 1 s c in each of the next 4 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * to within 3 ½ inches from beginning of round, sl st in next st, ch 1, turn.

2nd, 3rd and 4th Rows: Skip the sl st, sl st in next s c, 1 s c in each s c to within last s c, sl st in this s c, ch I, turn.

5th Row: Skip the sl st, 1 sl st in each of the next 2 sts, 1 s c in each s c to within last 2 s c, 1 sl st in each of the last 2 s c, ch 1, turn.

6th, 7th and 8th Rows: Skip the 2 sl sts, 1 sl st in each of the next 2 s c, 1 s c in each s c to within last 2 s c, 1 sl st in each of the last 2 s c, ch 1, turn.

9th Row: Skip the 2 sl sts, 1 sl st in each of the next 4 sts, 1 s c in each s c to within last 4 s c, 1 sl st in each of the next 4 s c, ch 1, turn.

10th Row: Skip 2 sl sts, 1 sl st in each of the next 2 sl sts, 1 sl st in each of the next 4 s c, 1 s c in each s c to within last 4 s c, 1 sl st in each of the next 4 s c, cut thread. Attach thread at lower edge of hat and working across back of hat, work 1 s c in each s c working into base of each st to give a firm edge then working over wire work 1 s c in each s c around entire brim working into base of each st of previous row, join, cut thread.

CHERRIES: With Red ch 2, 6 s c in 2nd st from hook, do not join this or following rounds.

2nd Round: * 1 s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * twice (9 s c).

Work 3 rounds even. Fill with cotton, then decrease every other s c until opening is closed (to decrease: * insert hook in next s c, pull loop through, repeat from * once, thread over and work off all loops at one time), fasten securely. Work another cherry in same manner.

STEM: Attach Green in top of cherry, crochet a ch about 5 inches long, attach to top of 2nd cherry, fasten securely. Work 2 more cherries and stem in same manner but working the chain 1 inch shorter. Work 1 more cherry same as 1st cherry. Attach Green and crochet a ch about 1 inch long, cut thread.

LEAVES: With Green ch 12, sl st in 2nd st from hook, s c in next st of ch, s d c in next st of ch (s d c: thread over hook, insert in st, pull through, thread over and work off all loops at one time), d c in next st, 1 tr c in each of the next 3 sts, d c in next st, s d c in next st, s c in next st. sl st in next st, repeat from beginning once, cut thread.

BAND: With Yellow crochet a ch to fit around 1st row of brim, sl st in 2nd st from hook, 1 sl st in each remaining st of ch, cut thread. Sew around hat as illustrated. Sew leaves, cherries and stems in position as illustrated.
