The Hairpin Lace Pirate Pattern

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "DAWN" BULKY YARN
4 ozs. Pearl Gray or color of your choice.
Hairpin staple—2 inches wide.
Aluminum crochet hook size F.

HAIRPIN LACE: Make a loop at end of yarn, insert 1 prong of hairpin staple in loop, wind yarn around right prong of hairpin staple, yarn over hook and draw through loop keeping loop at center of staple, drop loop from hook, turn staple ½ turn to the left, pick up the dropped loop at center and insert hook through top part of loop on left hand prong, pull loop through (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through both loops completing a single crochet, repeat from * until there are 64 loops on each side of staple, cut yarn. Work another strip of hairpin lace in same manner.

1st Round: Attach Gray in 1st 2 loops of 1st strip of hairpin lace, * ch 2, and keeping the twist in the loops, s c through next 2 loops of hairpin lace inserting through both loops at same time, repeat from * across strip, ch 2, join in 1st s c (this is lower edge of hat).

2nd Round: Ch 1 and working through back loop of sts only, work 1 sl st in each s c and in each ch, join.

3rd Round: Working in back loop of sts only, work 1 sl st in each sl st, join, cut yarn. Sew center of hairpin lace together.

Attach Gray in 1st 2 loops on other side of same strip, ch 2 and keeping the twist in the loops for entire hat, s c through next 2 loops, repeat from * all around, ch 2, join.

Next Row: Start to join strips as follows: sl st in next ch 2 space, ch 1, s c through 1st 2 loops of 2nd strip, ch 1, sl st in next ch 2 space of 1st strip, * ch 1, s c through next 2 loops of 2nd strip, ch 1, sl st in next ch 2 space of 1st strip, repeat from * all around ending to correspond, ch 1, join, cut yarn. Work another strip of hairpin lace having 42 loops on each side of staple.

Attach Gray through 1st 4 loops at top of 2nd strip, * ch 2, s c through next 3 loops of hairpin lace, repeat from * all around, ch 2, join.

Next Row: Sl st into 1st ch 2 loop and join the 3rd and 2nd strips together same as joining of 1st and 2nd strips, cut yarn.

Work a 4th strip of hairpin lace having 28 loops on each side of staple. Attach Gray through 1st 3 loops at top of 3rd strip, * ch 2, s c through next 3 loops of hairpin lace, repeat from * all around, ch 2, join.

Next Row: Sl st into ch 2 space and join 4th strip to 3rd strip same as 1st 2 strips, cut yarn. Attach Gray through 1st 4 loops at top of 4th strip of hairpin lace, * ch 1, s c through next 4 loops of hairpin lace, repeat from * all around, ch 1, join, cut yarn leaving a length. Thread into needle and draw top together.

TASSEL: Wind yarn over a 4 ¼ inch cardboard 25 times, tie one end. Cut opposite end. Tie again about ¾ inch down from 1st tying. Trim evenly and sew to top of hat as illustrated. Turn top down to side about 4 inches and tie tassel to center of 2nd strip.
