The Black and White Tam Pattern

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "GEM" HAT and BAG YARN, Article 144
2 skeins White.
1 skein Black for hat.
- or -
"DAWN" SOCK and SWEATER YARN
2 ozs. White.
1 oz. Black for hat.
Aluminum crochet hook size H for Hat and Bag Yarn.
Plastic crochet hook size I for wool.
½ yd. material for lining.
½ yd. buckram.
1 ornamental button.

If "Dawn" Sock and Sweater Yarn is used, work with a double strand of yarn throughout.

HAT

With White ch 2, 8 s c in 2nd st from hook, do not join.

2nd Round: 2 s c in each s c, sl st in next st.

3rd Round: Pull up a ⅝ inch loop on hook, yarn over and pull through loop, insert hook under single thread, pull loop through, yarn over and pull through both loops, long d c in same space (long d c: yarn over hook, insert in st, yarn over and pull loop up about ⅝ inch, yarn over and pull through loops, yarn over and pull through last 2 loops), * 2 long d c in next st, repeat from * all around, join in 1st st.

4th Round: Ch 1, s c in same space, 2 s c in next st, * 1 s c in next st, 2 s c in next st, repeat from * all around, join.

5th Round: Ch 1, s c in same space, drop White, attach Black (when changing color always complete last half of last st with next color), tr c in next s c, drop Black, * with White s c in next s c, with Black tr c in next s c, repeat from * all around, join in 1st s c, cut Black.

6th Round: Ch 1, s c in same space, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 2 s c in next st, * 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts, 2 s c in next st, repeat from * all around, join.

7th Round: Pull up a ⅝ inch loop on hook, yarn over and pull through loop, insert hook under single thread, pull loop through, yarn over and pull through both loops, 1 long d c in next st, 2 long d c in next st, * 1 long d c in each of the next 2 sts, 2 long d c in next st, repeat from * all around, join.

8th Round: Ch 1, s c in same space, 1 s c in each of the next 8 sts, 2 s c in next st, * 1 s c in each of the next 9 sts, 2 s c in next st, repeat from * all around, join.

9th Round: Same as 5th round.

10th Round: Same as 6th round.

11th Round: Same as 5th round (about 9 ¾ inches in diameter).

12th and 13th Rounds: 1 s c in each st, do not join these or following rounds. Place a marker at the beginning of each round.

14th Round: * * 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts, decrease in next 2 sts (to decrease: * insert hook in next st, pull loop through, repeat from * once, yarn over and work off all loops at one time), repeat from * * all around. Work 2 rounds even in s c.

17th Round: * 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, decrease in next 2 sts, repeat from * all around. Work 1 round even in s c.

Next Round: Working in s c, decrease 4 sts evenly spaced, sl st in each of the next 2 sts to even round, cut yarn.
