Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY The Famous "PURITAN" STAR SPANGLED MERCERIZED CROCHET COTTON, Article 40
4 balls Blue Spangle for hat.

2 balls Blue for hat.

Gauge for hat using single strand of thread: 7 sts = 1 inch.

Steel crochet hook No. 5 for hat.
Bicycle clip.
85 pearl beads and 11 daisy sequins for hat.
½ yd. material for lining.

HAT

Starting at front of hat with single strand of thread and No. 5 hook ch 90 (about 13 ½ inches), s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd Row: S c in 1st s c, d c in same space (an increase), s c in next s c, * d c in next s c, s c in next s c, repeat from * across row working 1 d c, 1 s c in last st (an increase), ch 1, turn.

3rd Row: D c in 1st s c, * s c in next d c, d c in next s c (pattern), repeat from * across row, ch 1, turn.

4th Row: 1 d c, 1 s c in 1st st (increase), d c in next s c, * s c in next d c, d c in next s c, repeat from * across row working 1 s c, 1 d c in last st (increase), ch 1, turn.

5th Row: S c in 1st st, * d c in next s c, s c in next d c, repeat from * across row, ch 1, turn.

6th Row: 1 s c, 1 d c in 1st st, s c in next d c, * d c in next s c, s c in next d c, repeat from * across row working 1 d c, 1 s c in last st, ch 1, turn. Repeat from 3rd through 6th rows until piece measures 5 ½ inches from beginning measuring at center, turn.

Next 16 Rows: Keeping pattern uniform decrease 2 sts at beginning and end of each row (to decrease: sl st in next st, pull up a loop in each of the next 2 sts, thread over and work off all loops at one time, work in pattern to within last 3 sts, work next 2 sts off as 1 st, omit last st), ch 1, turn. Keeping pattern uniform decrease 1 st at beginning of each row until 4 sts remain, cut thread. Press under a damp cloth.

EDGE: Attach thread about 3 inches from 1st decreasing row, ch 2, s d c in same space (s d c: thread over hook, insert in st, pull loop through, thread over and work off all loops at one time), skip ⅜ inch space, s c in next space, * ch 2, s d c in s c just made, skip ⅜ inch space, s c in next space, repeat from * around long point of hat working to same space at opposite side, sl st to corner, work edge down shaped side, across front and up opposite shaped slide to corner, cut thread.

Cut material ¼ inch larger all around than hat. Turn edge under and slip stitch in position. Fold hat in half and sew together where edge was omitted. Trim with pearls and sequins as illustrated.
