Gold Dust Lounging Slippers Pattern

Directions are given for Small Size. Changes for Large Size are in parentheses.

J. & P. COATS METALLIC “KNIT-CRO-SHEEN”: 2 (3) balls of No. 90-B Gold; and

COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. “SPEED-CRO-SHEEN” MERCERIZED COTTON: 3 balls of No. 122 Watermelon for each size.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).

GAUGE: 11 sc = 2 inches; 4 pattern rows = 1 inch.

SOLE (Make 2) … With Watermelon, ch 38 (42). 1st rnd: 5 dc in 4th ch from hook (heel), dc in next 3 ch, h dc in next 2 ch, sc in next 13 (15) ch, h dc in next 2 ch, dc in next 13 (15) ch; 7 dc in last ch (toe). Working along opposite side of starting chain, dc in next 13 (15) ch, h dc in next 2 ch, sc in next 13 (15) ch, h dc in next 2 ch, dc in next 3 ch. Join to top of ch-3. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in joining, 2 dc in each of next 5 sts, dc in each st around, making 2 dc in each of 7 dc at toe. Join as before. Measure 3¾ (4) inches at cen­ter from toe end and place a marker on each side of sole in line with this meas­urement. 3rd rnd: Ch 1, 2 sc in next 12 sts, sc in each st to marker, h dc in next 2 sts, increasing 7 dc evenly across toe, dc in each st to next marker, h dc in next 2 sts, sc in remaining sts. Join to first sc. Mark the center st of last rnd at toe. 4th rnd: Ch 1, sc in each st to within 2 sts before next marker, h dc in next 2 sts, 3 dc in marked st, h dc in next 2 sts, sc in each remaining st. Join. For Large Size Only—5th rnd: Sc in each st around. Join. Break off and fasten.

UPPER (NOTE: Use double strand of Gold throughout.) Starting at toe with Water­melon, ch 11. 1st row (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across—10 sc. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in next 4 sc, (2 sc in next sc—an inc made) twice; sc in next 3 sc, insert hook in last sc and draw thread through, drop Watermelon, with 2 strands of Gold complete the sc—12 sc. Ch 3, turn. Always change colors in this way. 3rd row: Bringing each loop to the level of first loop, draw up a loop in 2nd and 3rd ch from hook and in first 2 sc—5 loops on hook (see Fig. 2 below), thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to form eye of starstarting star stitch made; * bringing all loops to the level of first loop, draw up a loop in the eye and in the back loop of last loop drawn up on previous star st and in each of next 2 sc, thread over and draw through all 5 loops on hook, ch 1 for eyestar st made. Repeat from * across, ending with dc in same sc where last loop was drawn up. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in first dc, 2 sc in the eye of each star st across, insert hook in top of turn­ing chain, draw Gold through, drop Gold, pick up Watermelon and complete the sc. Ch 1, turn. Hereafter work 2 rows with each color. 5th row: Increasing 1 sc at both ends and in each of the 2 center sc, sc in each sc across—18 sc. Ch 1, turn. 6th row: Sc in each sc across, changing colors as on 2nd row. Ch 3, turn. 7th row: Repeat 3rd row—9 star sts and 1 dc. 8th row: Repeat 4th row—20 sc. 9th row: Sc in each sc across, increasing 1 sc in each of the 2 center sts. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 6th, 3rd, 4th and 9th rows 2 (3) times. There are 30 (34) sc on last row. Next 8 rows: Repeat 6th, 3rd, 4th and 6th rows twice. There are 34 (38) sc on last row. Break off Watermelon and fasten. Next row: With wrong side facing, skip first 18 (20) sc, attach Watermelon to next sc, ch 1, sc in same place and in remaining 15 (17) sc, changing color in last sc. Ch 3, turn. Following row: Work as for 3rd row—8 (9) star sts and 1 dc. Ch 1, turn. Next row: Sc in first dc and in eye of next star st, 2 sc in eye of next 6 (7) star sts, sc in eye of next star st and in top of ch-3-16 (18) sc. Ch 1, turn. Following row: Sc in each sc across. Break off Watermelon and fasten.

Side—1 st row: With Watermelon ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 5 ch; with wrong side facing, skip first 6 sc of Side, sc in next sc and in each remaining sc. Change color. Ch 3, turn. Now work even in pattern as follows: 1st and 2nd rows: Repeat 3rd and 4th rows of Upper. Next 2 rows: Repeat 6th row of Upper. Repeat last 4 rows until 6 (7) Gold stripes have been completed; then work 1 sc row with Watermelon. Break off and fasten. Next row: Repeat first row of Side. Work 3 more rows in pattern. Break off and fasten. Sew last row to correspond­ing row of upper, having 2 sc free at center front. Sew the 2 soles together. Pin upper to sole. Using Watermelon and working through both thicknesses, sc up­per to sole. Edging—1st rnd: With Water­melon and right side facing, sc closely around top edge. Join with sl st to first sc. Break off and fasten. 2nd rnd: Using Gold and with right side facing, sc in each sc around. Join. Break off and fasten. Com­plete other slipper in same way.
