Weave-a-Mat Pattern

Place Mat measures 12 x 18 inches

COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. “SPEED-CRO-SHEEN” MERCERIZED COTTON: 3 balls of No. 1 White and 2 balls of No. 12-A Blue Sparkle.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 1/0 (zero).

GAUGE (before weaving): 11 dc = 2 inches; 11 rows = 4 inches.

Starting at long edge with White, make a chain 20 inches long, having 11 ch to 2 inches. 1st row (right side): Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across until there are 109 dc, counting the first 3 ch (turning chain) as 1 dc. Cut off any re­maining ch. Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: Skip first 2 dc, dc in next dc—starting sp made; * ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next dc. Repeat from * across to within last 2 dc, ch 1, skip next dc, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: * Dc in next sp, dc in next dc. Repeat from * across to within last sp, dc in last sp, dc in 3rd ch of ch-4. Ch 4, turn. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows for pattern. Work even in pattern until 33 rows have been completed. Break off and fasten.

Weaving Chain (Make 32): With Blue, make a chain 27 inches long. Break off and fasten.

First Weaving Row—Step 1: With right side facing and 1 strand of chain, weave across first sp-row as follows: Weave under first dc, * over next dc, under next dc. Repeat from * across, leaving same length of chain at each end. Step 2: In same row and using 1 strand of chain, weave over first dc, * under next dc, over next dc. Repeat from * across, leav­ing same length of chain at each end. Work across each sp-row the same way. Turn each chain back to form a loop and sew end of chain to edge of place mat. With right side facing and White, work 1 row of sl st along opposite side of start­ing chain and along last dc row, holding in to measure 18 inches. Block.
