COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. “SPEED-CRO-SHEEN” MERCERIZED COTTON: 1 ball each of No. 122 Watermelon and No. 49-A Killarney.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 1.

Cut-up nylon hose or cotton batting, for stuffing.

GAUGE: Each motif measures about 2⅝ inches across.

MOTIF (Make 12) … Starting at center with Watermelon, ch 4. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 1, in ring make 4 sc and 5 h dc; thread over hook, insert hook in ring and pull loop through, drop Watermelon, draw Killarney through the 3 loops on hook—10 sts. Do not join rnds but mark the last st of each rnd to insure proper shaping. 2nd rnd: (H dc in next St, 3 h dc in next st) 5 times—20 h dc. 3rd rnd: H dc in next 2 h dc, (3 h dc in next h dc, h dc in next 3 h dc) 4 times; 3 h dc in next h dc, h dc in last h dc—5 corners. 4th rnd: H dc in next 3 h dc, (3 h dc in next h dc, h dc in next 5 h dc) 4 times; 3 h dc in next h dc, h dc in last 2 h dc; then sc in next 4 h dc, sl st in next h dc. Break off and fasten. 5th rnd: Attach Watermelon in the center h dc of any corner. Ch 1, 3 sc in same place, * sc in each st across to within center st of next corner, 3 sc in center st. Repeat from * around, ending with sc in each st across to within center st of next corner. Join with sl st to first sc. Break off and fasten.
  Matching corners exactly, sew one edge of each of 5 motifs to correspond­ing edges of 6th (center) motif. To form half a ball, sew side edges together from next free corner to center. Sew other half ball in same way. Sew the two halves to­gether, fitting points into notches and stuffing firmly before opening is closed.
