Candy Cane Afghan

This free pattern originally published by Coats & Clark in Afghans and Matching Pillows, Book 505, in 1954.

Each motif measures 4 inches in diameter.

Afghan measures 40 x 60 inches

CHADWICK'S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E. 232:
24 skeins (1-oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-out Skeins) each of No. 1 White and No. 737 Pink.

Plastic Crochet Hook No. 5.

MOTIF (Make 160) . . . Starting at center with Pink, ch 6. Join with sl st to form ring.

1st rnd: Ch 3, dc in ring, holding back on hook the last loop of next dc, make a dc in ring, drop Pink, draw a loop of White through 2 loops on hook, thus changing color--always change color in this manner--working over unused color make 3 dc in ring, drop White, pick up Pink, working over unused color make 3 dc in ring. Continue in pattern until 3 groups of each color (18 dc) have been completed, ending with a White dc. Join to top of ch 3.

2nd rnd: With Pink, sl st in next dc, ch 3, dc in same place (1 dc increased), 2 dc in each of next 2 dc, * change color, 2 dc in each of next 3 dc. Repeat from * around. Join.

3rd rnd: With Pink, sl st in next dc, ch 3, dc in same place, * dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc, change color, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

To Join Motifs: With wrong side facing, sew motifs together, joining half a White section and half a Pink section to corresponding sections on next motif. Join all motifs in this manner, making 6 rows of 15 motifs and 5 rows of 14 motifs and following diagram. Block to measurements.
