Join these simple striped afghan stitch squares to form this bold, interesting pattern, or, if you prefer arrange your own design.
Each block measures 3 inches square.
Afghan measures 45 x 63 inches;
Pillow 18 inches square.
CHADWICK'S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E. 232: 18 skeins (1 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins) of No. 360 Wood Bown; 16 skeins of No. 686 Paddy Green and 13 skeins of No. 251 Charlime for Afghan; 6 skeins of Wood Brown, 4 skeins of Paddy Green and 3 skeins of Charlime for Pillow.
Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Crochet Hook No. 5.
A Pillow 18 inches square.
GAUGE: 5 sts make 1 inch; 3 rows make 1 inch.
BLOCK (Make 315) . . . Starting at bottom with Paddy Green, ch 15.
1st row: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw up a loop, retaining all loops on hook, draw up a loop in each ch across (15 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 1 loop, * yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Repeat from * across. The loop which remains on the hook always counts as the first loop of the next row.
2nd row: Insert hook in 2nd vertical bar and draw loop through. Retaining all loops on hook, draw up a loop in each vertical bar across to within last vertical bar, draw up a loop in last vertical bar and the stitch directly behind it (this gives a firm edge to this side). Complete as for first row.
3rd row: Repeat 2nd row. Break off.
4th, 5th, and 6th rows: Attach Wood Brown to first vertical bar and repeat 2nd row. Break off at end of 6th row.
7th, 8th, and 9th rows: Attach Charlime and repeat 2nd row. At end of 9th row, sl st in each vertical bar across. Break off.
Sew blocks together to form a chevron, see illustration, making 15 rows of 21 motifs.
BORDER . . . 1st rnd: Attach Wood Brown to any corner, sc closely around, making 3 sc in each corner. Join.
2nd, 3rd, and 4th rnds: Sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in center sc at each corner. Join. Break off at end of 4th rnd. Block to measurements.
PILLOW--Side (Make 2) . . . Make 6 rows of 6 motifs and complete as for Afghan. Sew pieces together around 3 sides, insert pillow and sew remaining side.
