An afghan stitch square with a tweedy texture and subtle colorings, in a stylized design.

Each motif measures 4 3/4 inches square.
Afghan measures 50 x 67 inches;
Pillow 18 inches square.

CHADWICK'S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E. 232:
61 skeins (1 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins) of No. 360 Wood Brown; 5 skeins each of No. 253 Tangerine, No. 491 Pearl Grey, No. 229 Lt. Yellow and No. 647 Surf Green for Afghan; 10 skeins of No. 360 Wood Brown and 1 skein of each contrasting color for Pillow.

Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Crochet Hook No. 6
A pillow 18 inches square.

MOTIF (Make 140) . . . With Wood Brown, ch 15 to measure 3 inches.

1st row: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw up a loop, retaining all loops on hook, draw up a loop in each ch across (15 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 1 loop, * yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Repeat from * across. The loop which remains on the hook always counts as the first st of next row.

2nd row: Insert hook under 2nd vertical bar and draw loop through, retaining all loops on hook, draw up a loop in each vertical bar across to within last vertical bar. Insert hook through the last vertical bar and the st directly behind it and draw a loop through (this gives a firm edge to this side). Complete as for second half of first row. Repeat 2nd row until 12 rows have been completed. Now sc in each vertical bar across, then make 15 sc across each remaining side. Join and break off.

FIRST TRIANGLE . . . 1st row: Attach Tangerine to first sc, draw up a loop in each sc across (15 loops). Drop Tangerine. Attach Wood Brown and complete row as before.

2nd row: With Wood Brown, insert hook under 2nd and 3rd vertical bars and draw loop through (1 st decreased), draw up a loop in each vertiacl bar across to within last 2 vertical bars, insert hook under last 2 vertical bars and draw loop through (another st decreased). Drop Wood Brown, pick up Tangerine and complete row as before. Continue in this manner, changing colors and decreasing at both ends of each row until 1 st remains. Break off.

Work Triangles along 3 remaining sides the same way, using Surf Green and Brown for 2nd Triangle; Lt. Yellow and Brown for 3rd Triangle and Pearl Grey and Brown for 4th Triangle.

Sew motifs together, having corresponding colors of Triangles meet at center and making 10 rows of 14 motifs.

BORDER . . .1st rnd: With Wood Brown, sc closely around Afghan, making 3 sc in each corner. Join.

2nd and 3rd rnds: Picking up back loop only, make sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in center sc at corners. Join. Break off at end of 3rd rnd. Block to measurements.

PILLOW--Side (Make 2) . . . Make 4 rows of 4 motifs and sew together as before. Block. With wrong sides facing and working through both thicknesses, sc closely around 3 sides, insert pillow, then sc across remaining side. Join and break off.
