Ch 6, join with sl st to form ring. Ch 1. 1st rnd: 12 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: * Ch 2, s c in each of next 2 s c, repeat from * 5 more times (6 eyelet divisions and 6 s c sections in all). 3rd rnd: Ch 2, skip ch-2 sp and first s c of next s c group, 2 s c in next s c, 1 s c in next ch-2 sp, * ch 2, skip 1st s c of next s c group, 2 s c in next s c, s c in next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 4 more times. Ch 2, skip 1st s c of next s c group, s c in next s c, 1 pc st in next s c (to make a popcorn st, ch 1, 5 d c in next st, drop st from hook, insert hook back in ch-1 and draw loop through the one on hook). S c in next ch-2 sp. This starts the pc st group. 4th rnd: * Ch 2, skip 1st s c of next s c group, s c in next, 2 s c in next s c, s c in next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 4 more times. Then ch 2, skip 1st s c of next pc st group, 1 s c in pc st, 2 s c in next s c, s c in next ch-2 sp. 5th rnd: * Ch 2, skip 1st s c of next s c group, s c in each of next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c, 1 s c in next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 4 more times. Then ch 2, skip 1st s c of next pc st group, 1 s c in next s c, 1 pc st in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, 1 s c in next ch-2 sp. 6th rnd: * Ch 2, skip 1st s c of next s c group, s c in each of next 3 s c, 2 s c in next s c, s c in next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 4 more times. Then ch 2, skip 1st s c of next pc st group, 1 s c in pc st, s c in each of next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c, s c in next ch-2 sp. 7th rnd: * Ch 2, skip 1st s c of next s c group, s c in each of next 4 s c, 2 s c in next s c, s c in next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 4 more times. Then ch 2, skip 1st s c of next pc st group, 1 s c in next s c, 1 pc st in next s c, s c in next s c, 1 pc st in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, s c in ch-2 sp. 8th rnd: * Ch 2, skip 1st s c of next s c group, s c in each of next 5 s c, 2 s c in next s c, s c in next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * working s c over pc sts, as done previously. 9th rnd: * Ch 2, skip 1st s c of next s c group, s c in each of next 6 s c, 2 s c in next s c, s c in next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 4 more times. Then ch 2, skip 1st s c of next pc st group, s c in next s c, 1 pc st in next s c, s c in next s c, 1 pc st in next s c, s c in next s c, 1 pc st in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, s c in next ch-2 sp. 10th and subsequent rnds: Work in this manner of making 1 rnd of s c and 1 rnd of s c with pc sts alternately, thus making 1 additional s c in each rnd and making 1 additional pc st (in pc st section) in every pc st rnd, until work measures 9½ inches in diameter. If larger hat is desired, it should be made larger in diameter.

Then work 2 rnds of s c, but do not increase as done in previous rnds. For the next 1½ inches (or until inside measurement of beret is your headsize), decrease 8 sts in each rnd (to decrease, skip 1 s c, and make s c in next s c). Make a rnd of s c without increasing or decreasing. Then the following rnd, work directly under the sts of previous rnd (by inserting hook at the base of s c of previous rnd). Then again make a rnd of s c, then work a rnd of s c under this rnd as before. Continue in this manner to have a firm band of 2 inches or desired depth.
