Fringed Hat Pattern #2067

Headsize 22

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Knitting & Crochet Cotton, 2 balls of color 116 Blossom Pink or J. & P. Coats Crochet Cord, 5 balls. Milward's steel crochet hook, Nos. 2 and 4. 3 yds. millinery wire.

Crown: With No. 4 hook, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: 7 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c. 3rd rnd: * 1 s c in next s c, 2 s c in next (this is an increase), repeat from * around. 4th rnd: * 1 s c in each of next 2 s c, 2 s c in next and repeat from * around. 5th and subsequent rnds: Work s c in s c of previous rnd, making from 6 to 7 increases to the rnd so that work lies flat. From here on do not make the increases directly over one another but distribute them throughout the rnd. Continue in this manner until work measures 6½ inches in diameter.

Side Crown: Change to No. 2 hook and make fringe at top of crown as follows: * Ch 5, s c in 3rd ch from hook, s c in each of next 2 sts of ch thus making a fringe. S c in each of next 2 s c of last rnd, repeat from * around. Change to No. 4 hook and into the back loop of same rnd (leaving the fringes loose) work a rnd of s c, making s c in each s c. Continue to work s c in s c, until side crown is 2½ inches deep (or depth desired).

Brim: 1st rnd: Work s c in each s c of previous rnd. 2nd rnd: S c in each s c, making an increase (2 s c) in every 5th s c. 3rd and subsequent rnds: Work s c in each s c, increasing whenever necessary (being careful not to make an increase over one of previous rnd) keeping work flat. Continue in this manner for about 15 rnds or until brim measures 1¼ inches wide. Then with thread double, continue increases where necessary and at the same time work the s c over millinery wire. Keep the work smooth. Make three rnds over the wire. Break off 1 strand and change to No. 2 hook. Finish with a round of fringes the same as around top of crown.
