Swanky Beret Pattern #286

Headsize 22

Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen (2 balls) or Clark's O.N.T. Cronita (3 balls), color 26 Nile Green. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4.

To begin, ch 6 and join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: 8 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c. 3rd rnd: S c in next s c, ch 2, s c in same s c, s c in each of next 3 s c, ch 2, s c in same s c, s c in each of next 3 s c, ch 2, s c in same s c, s c in each of next 5 s c, ch 2, s c in same s c, s c in each of next 5 s c. 4th rnd: S c under ch-2, ch 2, s c in same place, * s c in each s c to next ch-2, s c under ch-2, ch 2, s c in same place. Repeat from * around. 5th rnd: Work s c in each s c, and under each ch-2 make 1 s c, ch 2, 1 s c (thus making 4 sectional ridges) and making 1 increase in each of the 2 wide sections (to make an increase work 2 s c in 1 s c). 6th to 12th rnds incl: Same as 5th rnd, but taking care not to make one increase directly over an increase of previous rnd. 13th to 48th rnds incl: Make an increase in s c right after ch-2 (which makes the long ridge between the two larger sections) for every other rnd. Work should now measure from 5¼ to 5½ inches in radius (from center ring to edge). If not, add more rnds. 49th rnd: S c in each s c, and only 1 s c under each ch-2. Do not make any more ch-2 at ridges. 50th, 51st and 52nd rnds: S c in each s c. 53rd to 60th rnds incl: Decrease 1 s c at each ridge. 61st to 70th rnds incl: Decrease 2 s c in each of the two wide sections in each rnd, (to decrease a st, insert hook in next st, pull through, insert hook in next st, pull through, then draw thread through all 3 loops at once) but not making 1 decrease directly over a decrease of previous rnd. Beret should now measure 22" headsize. If too large, make a few more decreasing rnds. Then work evenly for about 14 rnds, without increasing or decreasing.
