Materials: Clark's O.N.T. (4 balls) or J. & P. Coats (3 balls) Mercerized Crochet, size 10, Black for crown and J. & P. Coats Tatting Cotton, 3 balls of Black for veil. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 9. ⅔ yd. of black grosgrain ribbon 1 inch width for inside band. A hat ornament. A bottle of sizing or white shellac and a brush. 1 yd. fine black flower wire.
Crown. Top: Ch 4, join with sl st to form ring. Ch 1. 1st rnd: 6 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c (12 s c). 3rd rnd: * S c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * 5 more times. 4th rnd: * S c in each of next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c (this is an increase coming over an increase of previous rnd), repeat from * 5 more times (6 increasing points). 5th rnd: * S c in each of next 3 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * 5 more times. 6th and subsequent rnds: Work in this manner, increasing at each increasing point and having 1 s c more than the previous rnd in each s c section, until work measures 6½ inches. Break off.
Band. Ch 30, turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, and s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
Repeat 2nd row until band measures 21½ inches long (or same as your own headsize).
Sew the first and last rows of band together. Fasten off. Sew one edge of band to top of crown. Make a ¼ inch hem at lower edge of band and sew ribbon inside band adjusting headsize.
Veil. With Tatting Cotton, ch 170, turn. 1st row: S c in 14th ch from hook, * ch 8, skip 5 ch of foundation ch, s c in next ch, repeat from * to end of ch. Ch 9, turn. 2nd row: S c in 1st loop, * ch 8, s c in next loop, repeat from * across. Ch 9, turn.
Repeat 2nd row until veil measures 18 inches when stretched out (about 67 rows). Fasten off.
Pin veil out (to measure about 14 x 18 inches). Paint a thin coating of sizing over entire surface. Allow to dry. Starting at center of a 14 inch edge, sew wire along edge to next corner, continue across the 18 inch edge, and half way down other 14 inch edge. Fasten off. Fold 1½ inch pleats across the center, so that they are parallel to short ends (6 inches across after pleating). Then fold a 2½ inch pleat across the center parallel to top wire, leaving 3 inches at bottom and 6 inches at top. Place veil on band as illustrated and trim with ornament.
