Measurements After Blocking: Width at underarm – 35 inches. Length from top of shoulder – 13 inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam – 2½ inches.

Gauge: 2 raised shells make 1½ inches; 2 rows of raised shells make 1 inch.

BACK … Starting at bottom, make a chain 20 inches long (9 ch sts to 1 inch). Hereafter work must be done tightly. 1st row: In 5th ch from hook make 3 tr, ch 1, 4 tr; * skip 1 ch, sl st in next ch, skip 1 ch; in next ch make 4 tr, ch 1, 4 tr (2 shells made). Repeat from * until 19 shells in all are made; skip 1 ch, sl st in next ch, in next ch make 4 tr (a half shell). Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: * In back loop of next sl st make a shell, sl st in ch-1 of next shell. Repeat from * across, ending with 4 tr in last tr of last shell. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Work as for 2nd row, but inc. ½ shell at end of row – by ending with complete shell (instead of 4 tr) in last tr of last shell. Turn. 4th row: Ch 4 (to count as tr), 3 tr at base of ch-4, sl st in next ch-1; continue across in pattern, ending with complete shell in last tr of last shell (½ shell increased). Turn. 5th row: Ch 4, 3 tr at base of ch-4, sl st in next ch-1 and work in pattern across, ending with 4 tr. Ch 1, turn. 6th row: Repeat 2nd row. 7th, 8th and 9th rows: Repeat 3rd, 4th and 5th rows (in all, 1 shell increased at each edge). Now work as for 2nd row until piece measures 5 inches.

To Shape Armholes: Sl st in each st to 3rd sl st; ch 4 and complete a shell in sl st; work across, ending with 4 tr in 2nd sl st from end of row. Ch 1, turn. Next row: Shell in next sl st; make 17 more shells, 4 tr in turning ch of 1st shell of previous row. Following row: Sl st to 2nd sl st; ch 4 and complete a shell in sl st; work across, ending with 4 tr in last sl st. Ch 1, turn. Next row: Shell in next sl st; make 15 more shells, 4 tr in turning ch of 1st shell of previous row. Now work as for 2nd row (16 shells and 4 tr) until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, repeat 1st row of armhole shaping 3 times (4 shells and 4 tr remain). Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT … Make a chain 8 inches long. 1st row: Work as for 1st row of Back until 7 shells and 4 c d are made. Cut off remaining chain, turn. Work in pattern, increasing ½ shell at one edge (center front) every other row until 4 shells in all are increased (11 shells and 4 tr in row). Then work without increasing until piece measures 5 inches.

To Shape Armhole: Dec. at armhole edge to correspond exactly with armhole shaping of Back; then dec. an additional ½ shell at same edge. Work without decreasing until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then, starting at front edge, sl st across 1½ shells (thus starting neck shaping). Dec. ½ shell at same edge every other row twice but, when piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, shape shoulder to correspond with Back. Fasten off.

LEFT FRONT … Work to correspond with Right Front, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES … Starting at bottom, make a chain 15 inches long. 1st row: Work until 14 shells and 4 tr are made. Work 2 more rows in pattern, without increasing or decreasing. Then inc. ½ shell at end of each of next 8 rows (4 shells increased). Next row: Dec. ½ shell at both ends of row. Work without increasing or decreasing until piece measures 7½ inches. Now dec. ½ shell at both ends of each row until 4 shells are decreased at each edge. Fasten off.

COLLAR … Starting at neck edge, make a chain 15 inches long (10 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: Work 20 shells and 4 tr on chain. Work in pattern for 2 inches, decreasing ½ shell at both ends of last row. Fasten off.
Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in, easing in extra fullness across 5 inches at top. Sew collar in place. Fasten at neck with hook and eye. Sew ornament at neck edge, under collar. If desired, sew shoulder paddings in place.
