MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS CROCHET CORD, 4 balls.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 5.

GAUGE: 9 sts make 2 inches; 9 rows make 2 inches.

Starting at the waistband, make a chain 24 inches long. 1st row: Thread over, insert hook in 4th ch from hook and draw loop through, thread over, skip 1 ch, draw up a loop in next ch, thread over and draw through all 5 loops on hook (cluster made). * Ch 1, thread over, draw up a loop in same place as last loop of previous cluster, thread over, skip 1 ch, draw up a loop in next ch, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (another cluster). Repeat from * across until there are 101 clusters. Ch 3, turn. Cut off remaining ch. 2nd row: Thread over, insert hook at base of ch-3 and draw loop through, thread over, insert hook in tip of next cluster and draw loop through and complete a cluster as before. * Ch 1, thread over, draw up a loop in same place, thread over, draw up a loop in tip of next cluster and complete another cluster. Repeat from * across, drawing up last loop of last cluster in top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until piece measures 1¼ inches. Ch 3, turn.
Next row: (Thread over, draw up a loop in tip of next cluster) twice; and complete a cluster as before (cluster decreased). Ch 1 and continue in pattern across until there are 98 clusters in row, then ch 1, thread over, draw up loop in same place as last cluster, thread over, draw up loop in tip of next cluster, thread over, draw up loop in top of turning ch, thread over and draw through all 7 loops on hook (1 cluster decreased at each end of row). Ch 3, turn. Continue in this manner, thus decreasing 2 clusters on each row until all sts are worked off. Fasten off.

CORD … With double thread, make a chain about 30 inches long. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each st of ch. Fasten off.
Sew ends of waistband together. Turn point up to bottom of waistband and sew edges together for 4½ inches. Work beading as follows: 1st row: Attach thread to any free chain of starting ch at waistband (at center of cluster), ch 3, insert hook in next ch-1 sp and make dc, * ch 2, (insert hook in next ch-1 sp and draw loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops) twice; thread over and draw through all 3 loops on hook. Repeat from * around, joining with sl st to top of ch-3. 2nd row: Sc in sp, * ch 3, sc in 3rd ch from hook, sc in same sp, sc in next sp. Repeat from * around. Join and fasten off. Draw cord through holes in beading.
