Spice Edging & Monogram Set Pattern

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.
A spice bath towel, hand towel, wash cloth and bath mat.

BATH TOWEL EDGING (Make 2) … Starting at long side, make a chain slightly longer than width of towel. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across until piece reaches across towel, having a number of dc (counting turning chain) divisible by 3 and 2 more at end of row. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip first 2 dc, * in next dc make dc, ch 1 and dc (V st made); skip next 2 dc. Repeat from * across, ending with a V st in 3rd st from end of row, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 3rd to 6th rows incl: Make a V st in sp of each V st across, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn. At end of 6th row, ch 1 to turn. 7th row: Sc in first dc, * 2 sc in sp of next V st, sc between this V st and next V st. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in top of turning chain. Ch 1, turn. 8th to 13th rows incl: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 14th row: Sl st in each sc across. Break off. Sew edgings to towel. Complete hand towel the same way.

WASH CLOTH EDGING1st rnd: Attach thread to any corner, make 3 sc in same corner, sc closely around, making 3 sc in each corner. Join. 2nd rnd: Ch 5, dc in same place as sl st, (skip 1 sc, V st in next sc) twice; * skip next 2 sc, V st in next sc. Repeat from * across to within 3 sc of 3-sc group at next corner, (skip 1 sc, V st in next sc) 5 times, complete other sides and corners to correspond. Join to 3rd ch of ch-5. 3rd rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 5, dc in same sp, make V st in each V st around. Join to 3rd ch of ch-5. Break off.

MONOGRAMS … Draw letters on tracing paper, 10 inches for bath towel and bath mat, 6 inches for hand towel, and 4 inches for wash cloth. Pin letters in place on bath towel and baste around outline. Now make a chain slightly longer than twice the length of initial, sl st in each ch across. Break off. Sew chain in place over paper making a double outline of initial. Remove paper. Complete other pieces the same way.
