MATERIALS REQUIRED
American Thread Company "Dawn" or
"Clover Leaf" Germantown Wool
4 – ½ oz. Balls White
4 – ½ oz. Balls Black
1 Bone Crochet Hook #2.

Work body and head of Penguin real tight. Wings quite loose.

TAIL. 1st Row. With Black, ch 4, 3 s c on chain.

2nd to 7th Rows. 2 s c in first and last s c, 1 s c in each remaining s c and work 3 rows even.

11th to 19th Rows. Increase in first and last s c. (33 s c).

20, 21, 22, 23, 24 Rows. Start each row with ch 2 and end with a d c. Remaining sts work in s c. Work 2 rows even.

27 to 41 Rows. Increase 1 s c at beginning of each row. Work 20 rows even.

62nd Row. S c in first 7 s c then decrease by crocheting 8 and 9 s c together, decrease at other side in 8th and 9th s c and work 1 row even.

Next 12 rows repeat 62nd and 63rd rows. Without breaking yarn BEGIN HEAD. Work back over 15 s c.

2nd & 3rd Rows. Decrease 1 st at beginning of each row and work 2 rows even.

6th & 7th Rows. Increase 1 st at beginning of each row and work 1 row even.

9th Row. Increase 1 st at beginning of row.

10th Row. S c in s c then chain 12 for bill.

11th Row. 11 s c in chain and 1 s c in each 5 c.

12th Row. Increase 1 s c at beginning of row and s c in each s c, omitting last 5 s c in bill.

13th Row. Decrease 1 st at beginning of row and work 1 row even.

15th & 16th Rows. Decrease 1 st at beginning of row.

17th, 18th, 19th & 20th Rows. Decrease 1 st at beginning and end of each row. Break yarn. Join at other side and work other half of head to correspond.

Join yarn between the two headpieces, work over free s c, there should be 4 s c, work 11 rows even.

12th Row. Increase 1 st each side and work 10 rows even.

23rd Row. Increase 1 st each side and work 8 rows even. Then decrease 1 st at beginning of each row until 3 sts remain and work 12 more rows even. Break yarn.

FRONT SECTIONS. With White ch 6, 5 s c on ch and work 3 more rows of s c.

5th to 21st Rows. Increase 1 st at beginning of each row. (22 s c) and work 7 rows even.

29th to 30th Rows. Increase 1 st at beginning of each row and work 7 rows even.

38th & 39th Rows. Same as 29th and 30th rows and work 8 rows even.

48th & 49th Rows. Same as 29th and 30th rows and work 7 rows even.

57th to 66th Rows. Same as 29th and 30th rows and work 22 rows even, break yarn.

LOWER SECTION. Ch 2, 6 s c in first ch.

2nd, 3rd & 4th Rows. 2 s c in every other s c.

5th, 6th, 7th & 8th Rows. 2 s c in every 3rd s c and work 5 rows even.

Work over 21 s c, turn work and work back over the 21 s c, turn and work 1 more row over the 21 s c.

Next 10 rows decrease 1 st at beginning and end of each row. Break yarn. Sew black head pieces together, sew white and black sections together starting at lower edge of bill, seam ½ inch each side at feet, fit in round piece matching to black tail piece and sew, leaving enough open to fill. Attach white at bill and work 7 rows, join and break yarn. Fill and sew the remainder of lower section in place.

FEET. Ch 6, 5 s c on chain and work 1 more row of s c.

3rd and 4th Rows. Increase 1 st in first and last s c.

5th to 10th Rows. Increase in first s c.

11th, 12th, 13th & 14th Rows. Decrease 1 st at beginning of each row. Make 2 White and 2 Black sections. Crochet them together, fill slightly and sew in position.

WINGS. With White ch 9, 8 s c on ch. Work even until wing measures about 6 inches. Make 2 white and 2 black sections, crochet them together with black. Work a second row of s c all around wing decreasing at lower edge to shape, across top of wing decrease until 3 s c remain. Sew in position. Make eyes in white by working 2 rows of outline stitch with a French Knot at top of eye.

The Penguin will be equally attractive made in any of the following yarns: "Dawn" Knitting Worsted, "Dawn" or "Clover Leaf" Sheland Floss or Lustre Wool.
