Using 3½ M/M (No. 9) Hook and M., make 96 chain, join with a sl.st. to form ring.

1st round—4 ch., miss 1 ch., 1 tr. in next ch., (1 ch., miss 1 ch., 1 tr. in next ch.) 9 times, * 2 ch., miss 1 ch., ("Cluster", 2 ch., "Cluster") in next ch., 2 ch., miss 1 ch., 1 tr. in next ch., (1 ch., miss 1 ch., 1 tr. in next ch.) 10 times, rep. from * twice, 2 ch., miss 1 ch., ("Cluster", 2 ch., "Cluster") in next ch., 2 ch., miss 1 ch., sl.st. in 3rd ch. at beg. of round, fasten off.

FRINGE

Wind M. around a piece of cardboard 4 ins. wide and cut along one side. With wrong side facing and using 4 strands of yarn, fold yarn in half and draw loop through a ch. sp. at lower edge, pull ends through loop and tighten. Rep. in each ch. sp. around lower edge, working 2 knots in each 2 ch. sp. next to corners and 3 knots in corner sps.

CAP

Using 3½ M/M (No. 9) Hook and M., make 4 chain, join with a sl.st. to form ring.

1st round—4 ch., (1 tr., 1 ch.) 7 times in ring, sl.st. in 3rd ch. at beg. of round.

2nd round—4 ch., 1 tr. in first 1 ch. sp., * 1 ch., (1 tr., 1 ch., 1 tr.) in next 1 ch. sp., rep. from * to end, 1 ch., sl.st. in 3rd ch. at beg. of round.

3rd round—4 ch., 1 tr. in first 1 ch. sp., * 1 ch., 1 tr. in next 1 ch. sp., 1 ch., (1 tr., 1 ch., 1 tr.) in next 1 ch. sp., rep. from * to last 1 ch. sp., 1 ch., 1 tr. in 1 ch. sp., 1 ch., sl.st. in 3rd ch. at beg. of round, fasten off.

4th round—Join C.1 in last 1 ch. sp. of previous round, 4 ch., * 1 tr. in next 1 ch. sp., 1 ch., rep. from * to end, sl.st. in 3rd ch. at beg. of round, fasten off.

13th round—As 5th round, working section in first set of brackets 6 times instead of twice.

14th round—As 4th round.

15th round—Using M., as 4th round, but do not fasten off.

16th round—Sl.st. in first 1 ch. sp., 4 ch., * 1 tr. in next 1 ch. sp., 1 ch., rep. from * to end, sl.st. in 3rd ch. at beg. of round.

17th round—As 16th round. Fasten off.

TASSELS (Make 2)

Wind M. 50 times round a piece of cardboard 4 ins. wide. Break off yarn, leaving an end several ins. long, thread through needle. Slip the needle through all the loops on the cardboard and tie the yarn tightly at one edge. Slip cardboard out and wind the yarn several times around the loops ¾-inch from the fold. Draw the needle through the top and sew the tassel to the center of the cap. Cut through the other fold and even off the ends.
