MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 2 balls of Ecru and 1 ball of Dark Yellow.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.
Cotton batting.
2 black beads for eyes.
2 pencils 4 inches long.

GAUGE: 6 sc make 1 inch; 6 rows make 1 inch.
Use a double thread throughout.

BODY (Make 2) ... With Ecru, ch 13. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (this is tail end  - place a marker) . Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 3 sc in 1st sc (2 sc increased), sc in each sc across, 3 sc in last sc (2 more sc increased). Ch 1, turn.

Repeat the 2nd row until there are 36 sc in the row. Work without increasing until piece measures 2 inches in all, ending at Tail end. Ch 1, turn.

TAIL ... 1st and 2nd rows: Sc in next 4 sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd and 4th rows: Sc in next 2 sc. Ch 1, turn. On next row work off these 2 sc as 1 sc and break off. Attach thread to next sc on 3rd row and work the other 2 sc of 4 sc-group to correspond with those just completed. Break off.

Attach thread to base of Tail and work as follows: 1st row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc, decreasing the last 2 sc - to dec 2 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc twice. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Dec 2 sc, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows until 16 sc remain.

NECK ... 1st row: Starting at front edge, make sc in next 8 sc. Ch 1, turn. Work over these 8 sc until Neck measures 1½ inches, ending at front edge. Ch 7, turn.

HEAD ... 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sc in each sc across (15 sc) . Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: 2 sc in 1st sc, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: 2 sc in 1st sc, sc in each sc across, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. Work without increasing until Head measures 1⅛ inches from ch-7. Now dec 2 sc at both ends of each row until 3 sc remain. Break off. Sew the Body pieces together from ch-7 at Neck around Head and across back to Tail end.

GUSSET ... With Ecru, ch 2. 1st row: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: 2 sc in 1st sc, sc in each sc across, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. Work without increasing until piece reaches from ch-7 of Head to first half of Tail. Then dec 1 sc at both ends of each row until 1 sc remains. Break off.

Sew Gusset in place, leaving openings for stuffing and for Legs.

Stuff Body very firmly and sew up opening.

LEG (Make 2) ... With Dark Yellow, ch 6. Join. 1st rnd: Sc in each ch around. Repeat the 1st rnd until Leg measures 1½ inches in all. Break off.

Wind sufficient cotton batting around a pencil to stuff Legs. Stuff and insert Leg into opening and sew open­ing all around Leg. Finish other Leg in the same way.

FOOT (Make 4) ... With Dark Yellow, ch 3. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 sc in next 2 sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd and 4th rows: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: 2 sc in 1st sc, sc in each sc across, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. Now work without increasing until Foot measures 1½ inches in all. Break off.

Cut a piece of cardboard slightly smaller than Foot and place it between 2 Feet. Sew edges neatly together, then sew Foot to Leg. Finish other Foot in the same way.

BILL ... With Dark Yellow, ch 5. 1st rnd: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch; place a marker. Work along other side of chain, making sc in each ch, 3 sc in last ch, place another marker. 2nd rnd: Sc in each sc around. Repeat the 2nd rnd, decreas­ing 1 sc over each marker every other rnd until 7 sc remain. Work without decreasing until Bill measures 1¼ inches. Break off. Stuff firmly and sew to Head.

Sew a bead on each side of Head for eye. With Yellow, work outline stitch all around eyes and embroider wings on each side of Body in satin stitch. With a scrap of Black make 3 straight stitches at front of each Foot about ¼ inch apart.
