Size 56 x 72 inches

MATERIAL:
8 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) royal blue
3 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) white
2 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) yellow
4 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) light green
1 aluminum afghan crochet hook 10 in. long No. 8 or H

GAUGE:  3 sts. = 1 inch for afghan st.; 4 sts. = 1 inch for cable st.; 3 rows = 1 inch

WIDE CABLE STITCH STRIP (Make 3):
     With blue ch. 42. 1st row: insert hook in 2nd st. from hook and draw up a loop, retain loop on hook, repeat in every ch. across row. (This is half of afghan st. row). 2nd row: y.o. hook, pull through 1st loop, * y.o. hook, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * across row until only 1 loop is left on hook. (This finishes afghan st. row). 3rd row: draw up a loop in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th vertical bar, P next 2 sts. (yarn in front of hook, insert hook in vertical bar of next st., bring yarn below hook and to back of work, y.o. and through vertical bar on hook—this is a purl st.) draw up a loop in next 6 vertical bars, P next 2 sts., draw up a loop in next 10 vertical bars, P next 2 sts., draw up a loop in next 6 vertical bars, P next 2 sts., draw up a loop in next 5 vertical bars, insert hook through both vertical bars of end st. (42 loops on hook) 4th row: Work off same as 2nd row. Repeat 3rd and 4th row 6 times. (6 afghan st. rows) 9th row: same as 3rd row. 10th row: (cable twist row) y.o. hook, pull through first loop, * yarn over hook, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * 6 times more, drop loop from hook, slip next 3 sts. to an extra sock needle and hold in back of work, slip dropped loop back to afghan hook, * yarn over hook and pull through 2 loops, repeat from * twice more, drop loop off hook, slip the 3 sts. from extra needle to afghan hook and then slip dropped loop to afghan hook, * yarn over hook and pull through 2 loops (a cable made), repeat from * 16 times more, drop loop from hook, slip next 3 sts. to an extra sock needle and hold in back of work, slip dropped loop back to afghan hook * yarn over hook and pull through 2 loops, repeat from * twice more, drop loop off hook, slip the 3 sts. from extra needle to afghan hook and then slip the dropped loop to afghan hook, * yarn over hook and pull through 2 loops, repeat from * 10 times more. Repeat 3rd and 4th row 7 times, then repeat 9th and 10th row (cable twist row). Continue to work this way cabling the 6 afghan sts. every 8th row until strip measures about 67 inch. and has about 200 rows, ending with 7 rows above last cable twist row. Work 1 row slip st. taking up the vertical bars of all sts. Fasten off.

NARROW CABLE STITCH STRIP: (Make 4 green and 2 yellow)
     Ch. 14. 1st row: Insert needle in 2nd st. from hook and draw up a loop, retain loop on needle, repeat in every ch. across row. (This is half of afghan st. row). 2nd row: y.o. hook, pull through first loop, * y.o. hook, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * across row until only 1 loop is left on hook. (This finishes afghan st. row). 3rd row: Draw up a loop in 2nd vertical bar, P next 2 sts., draw up a loop in next 6 vertical bars, P next 2 sts., draw up a loop in next vertical bar, insert hook through both vertical bars of end st. 4th row: Work off loops same as 2nd row. Repeat 3rd and 4th row 6 times. (6 afghan st. rows). 9th row: same as 3rd row. 10th row: (cable twist row) y.o. hook, pull through first loop, * y.o. hook, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * twice more, cable the next 6 sts. as in wide cable strip, * yarn over hook, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * 3 times. Repeat 3rd and 4th 7 times, then repeat 9th and 10th row (cable twist row). Cont. to work this way, cabling the 6 afghan sts. every 8th row until strip measures and has the same amount of rows as the wide cable strip. Finish off the same way.

NARROW AFGHAN STITCH STRIP: (Make 4)
     With white ch. 9. 1st row: Insert needle in 2nd st. from hook and draw up a loop, retain loop on needle, repeat in every ch. across row. (This is half of afghan st. row). 2nd row: y.o. hook, pull through first loop, * yarn over hook, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * across row until only 1 loop is left on hook. (This finishes afghan st. row). 3rd row: Draw up a loop through the 2nd and all succeeding vertical bars to within 1 st. of end, insert hook through both vertical bars of end st. (to give this side of work a firm edge), retaining all loops on hook. 4th row: Work loops off as 2nd row. Repeat 3rd and 4th row alternately until strip measures same as other strips. Next row: Work slip st. taking up the vertical bars of all sts. Fasten off.

FINISHING:
     Sew strips together from wrong side with an overhand stitch, taking up top thread of each st. on each edge only. Join all strips in this manner in following order: * 1 blue strip, 1 green strip, 1 white strip, 1 yellow strip, 1 white strip, 1 green strip. Repeat from * once more, then 1 more blue strip.

EDGING:
     With blue work 1 row s.c. around the entire afghan working 3 s.c. in each corner st. Work 1 row each in green, white and yellow the same way. Next row: Working from right side attach blue, ch. 4, drop loop from hook, attach yellow, work 1 s.c. in 2nd st. on edge, * ch. 4, drop yellow loop from hook, pick up dropped blue loop and keep the yellow chain and yarn in back of the blue, skip 1 st. on edge and work 1 s.c. in next st., ch. 4, drop blue loop from hook, pick up dropped yellow loop, keep the blue ch. and yarn in back of the yellow, skip 1 st. on edge and work 1 s.c. in next st. Repeat from * to corner, omit skipping a st. for 3 patterns at corner, then continue to work pattern on rem. 3 sides as before working all corners same as first one. Fasten off. Block to size.
