MATERIALS … The following amount of materials is sufficient for 6 place mats, each about 12 x 18 inches, and a center mat about 15 x 32 inches.
Choose one of the following threads in size 20, White or Ecru:
J. & P. Coats Big Ball Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, 13 balls.
Or, Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, 31 balls.
Or, J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, 23 balls.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8 or 9.

GAUGE: 2½ shells make 1 inch; 5 rows make 1 inch.

PLACE MATS(Make 6). Starting at short side, ch 143 (to measure about 13 inches). 1st row: D c in 5th ch from hook, 2 d c, ch 2 and 3 d c in same ch (1 shell made); * skip 3 ch; in next ch make 3 d c, ch 2, 3 d c (another shell made); skip 3 ch; in next ch make 3 d c, ch 2, 3 d c; skip 3 ch, d c in next ch, make a knot st (to make a knot st, draw loop on hook out ¼ inch, draw thread through, making a chain st of it; insert hook between loop and single thread of this ch, and make an sc); skip 3 ch, s c in next ch, 2 knot sts, skip 3 ch, s c in next ch, 2 knot sts, skip 3 ch, s c in next ch, 1 knot st, skip 3 ch, d c in next ch, skip 3 ch, shell in next ch. Repeat from * across, ending with 3 shells and 1 d c. Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: 3 d c, ch 2, 3 d c in ch-2 sp (shell made over shell), ** shell over each of next 2 shells, d c in next d c, 2 knot sts, * s c over double loop at right of next center knot of previous row, s c over double loop at left of same knot, 2 knot sts. Repeat from * once more, 2 knot sts, d c in next d c, shell over next shell. Repeat from ** across, ending with 3 shells and 1 d c. Ch 4, turn. 3rd row: ** Shell over each shell, d c in next d c, 1 knot st, * s c over double loop at right of next center knot of previous row, s c over double loop at left of same knot, 2 knot sts. Repeat from * once more, s c over double loop at right of next center knot of previous row, s c over double loop at left of same knot, 1 knot st, d c in next d c. Repeat from ** across ending with 3 shells and 1 d c. Ch 4, turn. 4th, 5th and 6th rows: Repeat 2nd, 3rd and 2nd rows once. Ch 3 to turn at end of 6th row. 7th row: ** 1 knot st, s c in ch-2 of shell, * 2 knot sts, s c in ch-2 of next shell. Repeat from * once more, 1 knot st, d c in next d c, shell in center knots of each of next 3 double knot sts, d c in next d c. Repeat from ** across, ending with 1 knot st and d c. Ch 3, turn. 8th row: ** 2 knot sts, * s c in double loop at right of next center knot, s c in double loop at left of same knot, 2 knot sts. Repeat from * once more, d c in next d c, shell over each of next 3 shells, d c in next d c. Repeat from ** across, ending with d c in turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 9th row: ** Knot st, * s c in double loop at right of next center knot, s c in double loop at left of same knot, 2 knot sts. Repeat from * once more, s c in double loop at right of next center knot, s c in double loop at left of same knot, 1 knot st, d c in next d c, shell over each of next 3 shells. Repeat from ** across, ending with 1 knot st, d c in turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 10th, 11th and 12th rows: Repeat 8th, 9th and 8th rows once. Ch 4 to turn at end of 12th row. 13th row: ** Shell in center knots of each of next 3 double knot sts, d c in next d c, 1 knot st, * s c in ch-2 of next shell, 2 knot sts. Repeat from * once more, s c in ch-2 of next shell, 1 knot st, d c in next d c. Repeat from ** across, ending with 3 shells and 1 d c. Ch 4, turn. The last 12 rows (2nd to 13th rows incl.) constitute the pattern. Repeat these 12 rows until there are 13 rows of blocks. Do not break off, but ch 7, turn * s c in next shell, ch 3. Repeat from * 2 more times, d c in next d c, ch 3, ** s c in center knot of next double knot st, ch 3. Repeat from ** 2 more times, d c in next d c. Continue thus around. Then work a row of shells all around outer edges. Fasten and break off.

CENTER MAT … Starting at short side, ch 174 (to measure about 13½ inches), and work exactly as for place mats until there are 25 rows of blocks. Do not break off, but finish edges as for place mats. Fasten and break off.
