TO MAKE A SQUARE:
With Color 1, Ch. 5, join in ring.
ROW 1—Ch. 3, 20 D.C. in ring, Slip St. in 3rd Ch. of the Ch. 3 at start, draw Color 2 yarn through Ch. on hook, break Color 1 Strand.
ROW 2—Ch. 3, * 1 D.C. in back loop of each of 5 D.C. of previous row, Ch. 2, 1 D.C. in same St. as last D.C. (corner), repeat from * 3 times more, ending (after Ch. 2 of 4th corner), Slip St. in 3rd Ch. of Ch. 3 at start.
ROW 3—Ch. 3, 1 D.C. around first D.C. of previous row (inserting hook under the D.C.), then 1 D.C. around the Ch. 3 of previous row (crossing the 2 D.C.), * 1 D.C. in each of the next 2 D.C., 1 D.C. around 5th D.C. of previous row, 1 D.C. around 4th D.C. of previous row (crossing the 2 D.C.), 2 D.C. in corner space, Ch. 2, 2 D.C. in same space, 1 D.C. around 2nd D.C. of previous row, 1 D.C. around first D.C. after corner of previous row (crossing the 2 D.C.), repeat from * around, ending (after Ch. 2 of 4th corner) 1 D.C. in same space, Slip St. in 3rd Ch. of Ch. 3 at start, draw Color 3 yarn through Ch. on hook, break Color 2 strand.
ROW 4—Ch. 3, * cross 2 D.C. over same 2 crossed D.C. Sts. of previous row by working first D.C. around top D.C. and the 2nd D.C. around lower D. C., then 1 D.C. in each of the next 2 D.C., now cross 2 D.C. in same manner as before, 1 D.C. in each of the next 2 D.C., 2 D.C. in corner space, Ch. 2, 2 D.C. in same space, 1 D.C. in each of the next 2 D.C., repeat from * around, ending 2 D.C. in same space, 1 D.C. in next D.C., join to Ch. 3 at start of row in same manner as before.
ROW 5—Ch. 3, * cross 2 D.C. in same manner as before. 1 D.C. in each of the next 2 D.C., cross 2 D.C., 1 D.C. in each of the next 2 D.C., cross 2 D.C., 2 D.C. in corner space, Ch. 2, 2 D.C. in same space, cross 2 D.C., 1 D.C. in each of the next 2 D.C., repeat from * around, ending row, 2 D.C. in same space, cross 2 D.C., 1 D.C. in next D.C., join to Ch. 3 at start, draw Color 4 Yarn through Ch. on hook, break Color 3 strand.
ROW 6—Work in same manner as Row 5, working 2 D.C., Ch. 2, 2 D.C., in each corner.
ROW 7—Work in same manner as Row 6, having 1 Group of 2 crossed Sts. before and after the 2 D.C. in each corner, break yarn.
ROW 8—With Color 1, work 1 row S.C. in back loop of each St., working 2 S.C. in each Ch. at corners.
ROW 9—With Color 5 work same as Row 8, working 2 S.C. in each of 2 Sts. at corners.
ROW 10—With Color 4 work same as Row 9.
With Color 5 and Tapestry Needle, work small Spider in center of each square.
Sew Squares together as illustrated.
FRINGE:
With Color 4, fold 2 strands, 8 inches long and loop through every other St. around entire afghan.
