Flower and Grape Potholder Pattern

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY The Famous "PURITAN" CROCHET COTTON, Article 40 or "DE LUXE" Quality CROCHET COTTON, Article 346
2 balls White.
1 ball each Forest Green or Evergreen and Shaded Purples and
"STAR" SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY COTTON, Article 50
4  skeins Bright Red, 1 skein each Black and Yellow will make all 3 potholders.
Steel crochet hook No. 7.

POTHOLDER: Front Section-With White work 1st 11 rounds same as Grape Hot Plate Covers.
12th Round. Work even in s c.
13th Round. 1 s d c in each of the next 2 sts (s d c: thread over hook, insert in st, pull loop through, thread over and work off all loops at one time), 1 s c in next st, sl st in each of the next 2 sts, cut thread.
Work another section for back in same manner. With wrong side of both sections facing, with Green, working through both sections, work same as edge for Grape Hot Plate Covers. With Green cover a bone ring with s c and sew to potholder as illustrated. This is the foundation for all 3 following potholders.

POPPY POTHOLDER-FLOWER: With Black "STAR" SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY COTTON, ch 7, join to form a ring, ch 1, s c in ring, * ch 5, s c in same space, repeat from * 3 times, ch 5, join in 1st s c, cut thread.
2nd Round. Attach Green in any s c, ch 1, s c in same space. 5 s c in next loop, * s c in next s c, 5 s c in next loop, repeat from * all around, join in 1st s c, cut thread.
3rd Round. Attach Bright Red in any s c, working in back loop of sts only throughout, ch 3, d c in same space, 2 d c in each remaining s c, join in 3rd st of ch.
4th and 5th Rounds. Ch 3, 2 d c in next d c, * 1 d c in next d c, 2 d c in next d c, repeat from * all around, join.
6th Round. Ch 4, 2 tr c in next d c, * 1 tr c in next d c, 2 tr c in next d c, repeat from * all around, join, cut thread.
Make 4 pleats starting at the Green round and widening out to about ½ inch at the last round. Overlap all pleats in same direction to form petals. Tack with Red on underside of pleat leaving the last round free. Sew to top of potholder.

LEAF: With Green ch 18, d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1, turn.
2nd Row. Sl st over the 1st 4 d c, ch 3, 1 d c in each of the next 12 sts, ch 6, turn.
3rd Row. D c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts of ch, 1 d c in each of the next 12 d c, ch 1, turn. Repeat the last 2 rows 3 times, cut thread. Work another leaf in same manner but repeat 2nd and 3rd rows twice.

STEM: With Green ch 24, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, cut thread. Sew stem and leaves in position as illustrated.

BUTTERCUP POTHOLDER-FLOWER: With Yellow, ch 5, join to form a ring, ch 1, s c in ring, ch 3, 2 tr c in same space, ch 3, * s c in same space, ch 3, 2 tr c in same space, ch 3, repeat from * twice, sl st in 1st s c, cut thread. Work 4 more flowers in same manner.

LEAF: With Green ch 6, join to form a ring, ch 1, s c in ring, * ch 3, 1 d c, 3 tr c, 1 d c, ch 3, s c in same space, repeat from * once, ch 3, 1 d c, 3 tr c, 1 d c in same space, ch 3, sl st in 1st s c, then work a chain about 2 inches long leaving a length for sewing, cut thread. Work 2nd leaf in same man­ner but work a chain 2½ inches long. Work a 3rd leaf with a chain about 1½ inches long.

STEMS FOR FLOWERS: With Green ch 2, d c in 2nd st from hook, sl st in same space (knot), then work a chain about 5½ inches long, cut thread leaving a length for sewing. Pull this chain through the center hole of flower with the knot on the outside. Work 4 more stems in same manner making them different lengths. Sew flowers and leaves in position as illustrated. Shorten any excess length of stems.

GRAPE POTHOLDER: Work grapes, leaf and tendril same as small Grape cover working tightly.

STEM: With Green ch 19, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, cut thread.
Sew grapes, leaf, stem and tendril in position as illustrated.
