Madison Shrug Pattern

Small, Medium and Large

Directions are given for Small size. Changes for Medium and Large sizes are given in brackets.

This jacket can be made using a single strand of yarn with any of the following:

"DAWN" NYLON OF KNITTING WORSTED SIZE
or
"DAWN" KNITTING WORSTED
15 (16-17) ozs. White or color desired.

If desired, Jacket can be made with double strand of yarn with any of the following:

"DAWN" or "CLOVER LEAF" NYLON
or
"DAWN" DACRON FINGERING YARN
or
"DAWN" SOCK AND SWEATER YARN
12 (12-14) ozs. White or color desired
Plastic crochet hook No. 8.

GAUGE: 9 pattern sts = 2 inches. 7 rows = 2 inches.

RIGHT HALF: Starting at sleeve edge ch 50 (50, 58), work in pattern as follows:
1st Row. Sl st in 2nd st from hook, 1 sl st in each remaining st of ch working all sl sts loosely, ch 1, turn.
2nd Row. Working in back loop of sts, * sl st in next st, s c in next st, s d c in next st (s d c: yarn over hook, insert in st, pull through, yarn over and work off all loops at one time), 1 d c in each of next 3 sts, s d c in next st, s c in next st (pattern), repeat from * across row ending with a sl st in last st, ch 1, turn, 6 (6, 7) complete patterns in row.
3rd Row. Sl st in upper loop of 1st sl st of previous sl st row (the stitch is picked up in back of work), * working in back loop of sts work 1 sl st in next s c, 1 sl st in next s d c, 1 sl st in each of the next 3 d c, 1 sl st in next s d c, 1 sl st in next s c, sl st in upper loop of next sl st of previous sl st row picking up st from back of work, skip the sl st in back of st just made, repeat from * across row, turn.
4th Row. Ch 3 (counts as 1 d c), working in back loop of each sl st, skip 1st sl st, * d c in next st, s d c in next st, s c in next st, sl st in next st, s c in next st, s d c in next st, 1 d c in each of next 2 sts, repeat from * across row, ch 1, turn.
5th Row. Sl st in back loop of each st, skipping each sl st and working a sl st in previous sl st row in same manner as on 3rd row, ending with a sl st in 3rd st of ch 3, ch 1, turn.
Repeat from 2nd through 5th row for pattern.
Work even in pattern until work measures 2 inches from beginning.
Next Row. Keeping pattern even increase 1 st on each side, then increase 1 st on each side every other pattern row until there are 8 (8, 9) complete patterns across row. Work even in pattern until work measures 10 (11, 12) inches from the beginning ending with 2nd row of pattern, ch 29 (29, 37) for back, turn, drop yarn.
Next Row. Attach a separate strand of yarn and ch 28 (28, 36) for front, cut yarn.
Pick up dropped yarn, sl st in 2nd st from hook, 1 sl st in each st of ch, sl st across sleeve, 1 sl st in each st of other ch, ch 1, turn. Work even in pattern until back measures 8 (8½, 9½) inches from ch, ending with a sl st row, cut yarn.

LEFT HALF: Work same as right half. Block each sec­tion. Sew sleeve and side seams and sew center back seam.

EDGING: Starting at lower edge of back seam and working loosely, work a row of sl sts all around working 3 sl sts in each corner at front, ch 1, turn.
2nd Row. Working in back loop of sts, work 1 sl st in each st working 2 sl sts in each of the 3 corner sts at lower front, ch 1, turn.
3rd and 4th Rows. Working in back loop of sts, work 1 sl st in each sl st, ch 1, turn.
5th Row. Same as 2nd row. Work even in sl sts until band measures 1½ inches. Sew band together.

CUFFS: Attach yarn at lower edge of sleeve and work even in sl sts working in same manner as edge, turning each row until cuffs measure 3½ inches, cut yarn. Sew seams and turn cuffs back as illustrated.
