Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 12 balls of a light color and 7 balls of a dark color for centerpiece; 7 balls of a light color and 4 balls of a dark color for chair seat; 2 balls of a light color and 1 ball of a dark color for pot holder; 3 balls of a light color and 2 balls of a dark color for tie backs; 8 balls of a light color and 5 balls of a dark color for runner.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 6 or 7. A chair pad. Bias binding.
GAUGE: 10 d c make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.
CENTERPIECE No. 7163-A
When completed, centerpiece measures about 24 inches square.
Starting at one side, with dark color make a chain about 30 inches long. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across until there are 364 d c, counting turning ch-3 as 1 d c. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip 1st d c, d c in each of next 2 d c, leaving the last 2 loops of last d c on hook; attach light color and * draw through the 2 loops on hook. Holding dark color along top of previous row and working over it in order to conceal it, make d c in each of next 12 d c, leaving the last 2 loops of last d c on hook; drop light color, pick up dark color and draw through the 2 loops on hook; holding light color at top of previous row, make d c in each of 3 d c, leaving the last 2 loops on hook; pick up light color. Repeat from * across, ending with 3 dark d c, but do not carry light color beyond the 1st dark d c of last 3-d c group. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: 2 dark d c, * 12 light d c, 3 dark d c. Repeat from * across, concealing unused color as before, and ending with 3 dark d c. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the last row 3 more times. 7th row: With dark color, make d c in each d c across, concealing light color as before. Ch 3, turn. The last 6 rows (2nd to 7th rows incl.) constitute the pattern. Work in pattern for 24 inches, being sure to complete last pattern. Break off.
CHAIR SET No. 7163-B
Starting at front edge, with dark color make a chain about 14 inches long. Turn and work d c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across until there are 108 d c in the row, counting turning ch-3 as 1 d c. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn. Hereafter work as for Centerpiece 7163-A, increasing 2 d c at both ends of each row until there are 148 d c in the row (to increase, make 3 d c in 1st and last d c). Continue in pattern, without increasing for 4 inches. Then dec. 1 d c at end of each row until 130 d c remain (to decrease, work off 2 d c as 1 d c). Now dec. 2 d c at both ends of each row until 91 d c remain. Fasten and break off. Make another piece same as this.
Block pieces. Place the wrong sides of crocheted pieces together, and baste edges, leaving top open. Bind basted edges. Insert chair pad and, with dark color, overcast edges of opening together. Sew two 8-inch lengths of bias binding at each corner of top edge for ties (stitch raw edges together).
POT HOLDER No. 7163-C
When completed, pot holder measures about 6½ inches square.
Starting at one end, with dark color ch 65 (to measure about 7 inches). Work in pattern as for Centerpiece 7163-A until 4 patterns are completed. Fasten and break off. Make another piece as this.
Make a pad by cutting a square of padding, flannel or any soft material, slightly smaller than one of the crocheted pieces, and tack it to wrong side of first piece. Place the wrong side of second piece against padded side of first piece and, with a needle and dark color, overcast both edges together. To make corner loop, ch 25, turn, sl st in each st across. Break off, leaving a 6-inch length of thread, and fasten loop to corner.
TIE BACKS No. 7163-D
When completed, each tie back measures about 3½ x 17 inches.
Starting at one long side, with dark color ch 168 (to measure about 18 inches). Work in pattern as for Centerpiece 7163-A until 2 patterns are completed. Fasten and break off.
RUNNER No. 7163-E
When completed, runner measures about 11 x 28½ inches.
Starting at narrow end, with dark color ch 108 (to measure about 12 inches). Work in pattern as for Centerpiece 7163-A until 18 patterns are completed. Fasten and break off.
