AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "PURITAN" MERCERIZED CROCHET AND KNITTING COTTON
50 400-yd. Balls White, Ecru, Cream or Beige.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 8 or 9.
Each Motif measures about 6 inches.
234 Motifs are required for spread measuring about 84 x 108 inches without the fringe.

MOTIF. Ch 7, join to form a ring, ch 5, d c in ring, * ch 2, d c in ring, repeat from * 9 times, ch 2, join in 3rd st of ch 5.

2nd Row—Ch 3, 3 d c in same space, drop loop off hook, insert hook in 3rd st of ch and pull loop through, (popcorn st) * ch 3, 4 d c popcorn st in next d c, repeat from * 10 times, ch 3, join in 1st popcorn st.

3rd Row—Ch 6, d c in 4th ch from hook, * d c in next popcorn st, ch 4, d c in first ch, repeat from * all around, join.

4th Row—Ch 3, 2 d c in same space, * ch 5, 3 d c in next d c, repeat from * all around, ch 5, join in 3rd st of ch.

5th Row—Ch 5, * skip 1 d c, d c in next d c, ch 2, d c in center st of next loop, ch 2, d c in next d c, ch 2, repeat from * all around ending with skip 1 d c, d c in next d c, ch 2, d c in center st of next loop, ch 2, join in 3rd st of ch 5.

6th Row—Ch 3 and work a popcorn st in same space, * ch 3, popcorn st in next d c, repeat from * all around, ch 3, join.

7th Row—Sl st into loop and work a popcorn st in each loop with ch 4 between popcorn sts, ch 4, join.

8th Row—Work 4 s c over each loop, join.

9th Row—Ch 6, d c in 4th st from hook, * skip 2 s c, d c in next s c, ch 4, d c in 1st st of ch, repeat from * all around, join.

10th Row—Ch 5, 3 d c in next d c, ch 2, * 1 d c in next d c, ch 2, 3 d c in next d c, ch 2, repeat from * all around, join in 3rd st of ch 5.

11th Row—Ch 4, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c, ch 3, sl st in top of d c for picot, ch 4, * skip 1 d c, s c in next d c, ch 4, d c in center d c of next group, picot, ch 4, repeat from * all around.

Work a second motif joining to first motif in last row as follows, ch 4, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c, ch 1, join to picot of 1st motif, ch 1, complete picot, * ch 4, skip 1 d c, s c in next d c, ch 4, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c, ch 1, join to next picot of 1st motif, ch 1, complete picot, repeat from * once and finish row same as 1st motif.

Join 3rd motif to 2nd motif and join 4th motif to 3rd and 1st motifs in same manner leaving 3 picots free between joining to fill in with joining motif.

Work 230 more motifs having 3 rows of 15 motifs, 8 rows of 18 motifs, (adding all rows on one side for shaping at lower edge) and 3 rows of 15 motifs.

Joining Motif. Work first 2 rows of large motif, ch 7 d c in next popcorn st, * ch 4, d c in next popcorn st, repeat from * all around, ch 4, join.

Next Row—Ch 4, join to first free picot of large motif, ch 1, sl st in 3rd st of ch to complete picot, * ch 4, s c in next loop of small motif, ch 4, d c in next d c, ch 1, join to next free picot of large motif, ch 1, complete picot, repeat from * until all 12 picots have been joined, break thread.

Tassel Fringe. Over an 8 inch cardboard, wind thread 20 times, cut one end, loop over joined picots between motifs, draw ends through loop and tighten. * Over a 7 inch cardboard, wind thread 20 times, cut on end, loop through next loop before the picot, draw ends through loop and tighten, repeat from * once. * Over a 6 inch cardboard, wind thread 20 times, cut one end, loop through next loop before the picot, draw ends through and tighten. Repeat from * 4 times, then repeat 7 inch tassel twice.

At the 2 corners have 2 7-inch tassels, 10 6-inch tassels and 2 7-inch tassels.
