Pompom Cats and Kittens Pattern

Materials Required—AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "DAWN" KNITTING WORSTED, 1 ¼-oz. Skeins.

CAT. 8 Skeins White and 1 Skein Black if spotted cat is desired.

KITTEN, 3 Skeins White and 1 Skein Black if spotted kitten is desired. 1 Ball Red "Dawn" Worsted Floss for

MITTENS. 1 60-yd. Ball "Star" Pearl Cotton White Size 5. Bone Crochet Hook No. 2 and No. 5. ¾-yd. Ribbon and 2 Buttons for Eyes.

CAT is 19" long and KITTEN 11" long.

CAT

BODY FOUNDATION. With White ch 50 about 9 ½ inches. Work 3 s c in second st from hook, 1 s c in each st of chain, with 3 s c in last st, working on opposite side of ch work 1 s c in each st of ch, without joining, work 3 more rounds working 3 s c in center st at ends of each round. Join and break yarn.

LEG. Ch 36 and work 1 round the same as body foundation. Work another leg section in the same manner.

TAIL. Ch 15, and work 1 round the same as Leg. Center and place each Leg section crosswise on body foun-dation, about 1 ¼ inches from each end, sew in position, sew tail to one end of body foundation.

POMPONS FOR BODY. Over a 4" cardboard, wind wool 45 times, slip from cardboard and tie around center with "Star" Pearl Cotton, leaving about 10 inches of thread for sewing. Make 25 more body pompons. Make 21 White pompons for Legs and Tail, winding over a 3 inch cardboard 40 times, if Black is used wind 5 pompons over a 3 inch cardboard 40 times.

HEAD. Over a 5 ½” cardboard wind White 100 times, slip from cardboard and tie around center. Wind another pompon in the same manner.

TO MAKE CAT. Sew a double row of pompons to 3rd round of body foundation, starting at legs, leaving the 1 ¼ inch of foundation free at each end. 12 pompons are used for top of body. Sew 1 pompon in the 1 ¼ inch space at tail end of body. Turn the Foundation over, and sew the other 13 body pompons to foundation in the same manner. Sew 4 pompons to each leg, 2 on each side of leg foundation, sew 2 pompons to each side of tail foundation. Trim all pompons to shape body, legs and tail. Sew the 1 ¼ inch section for head back to body foundation, then place the two head pompons at each side and sew in position. Sew 1 White pompon under the head at neck. If Black is used sew 1 Black pompon at back of head at neck, 1 at the end of each front leg, 1 at the end of tail and 1 in the back of body. If Black is not used wind 5 extra White pompons to be used in place of Black. Trim Head pompons to shape head, trim all remaining pompons, comb lightly to fluff.

EARS. With Black ch 11 and work 10 s c on ch, ch 1 to turn each row. Work in s c decreasing 1 s c at the beginning of each row until 4 sts remain. Attach White and work in same manner until 1 st remains, then work 1 row of s c in White all around. If Black is not used, work Ear in White. With Red "Dawn" Worsted Floss embroider mouth, using a cross st.

WHISKERS. Starch a 36 inch heavy Black thread very stiffly, cut in 4 ½ inch lengths, draw through mouth and sew in position. Sew Buttons in position for Eyes and sew Ears in position.

KITTEN

BODY FOUNDATION. With No. 5 hook, ch 31 (about 7 inches) and work 3 s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each st of ch, with 3 s c in last st, working on opposite side of ch, work 1 s c in each st, join and break yarn.

LEG FOUNDATION. Ch 18 and work the same as body foundation. Work another leg in the same manner.

TAIL FOUNDATION. Ch 9 and work the same as body foundation. Center each leg foundation crosswise to body foundation and sew, leaving about 1 inch of body foundation free at each end. Sew tail to one end of body foundation.

POMPONS FOR BODY. Over a 4 inch cardboard wind White wool 45 times, slip from cardboard and tie around center with "Star" Pearl Cotton, leaving about 10 inches of thread for sewing. Cut loops and make 7 more body pompons in the same manner.

POMPONS FOR LEGS AND TAIL. Over a 3 inch cardboard wind wool 35 times, slip from cardboard, tie in same manner as body pompons, make 10 more in the same manner.

HEAD POMPONS. Over a 5 ½ inch cardboard wind wool 75 times, slip from cardboard and tie in the same manner as body pompons, make 1 more head pompon. If Black is to be used make 4 Black pompons by wind-ing wool 20 times over a 3 inch cardboard.

TO MAKE KITTEN. Sew 4 of the body pompons to top of body foundation, leaving about 1 inch free at each end of body foundation. Turn foundation over and sew the other 4 pompons to body in the same manner, trim to shape body. Sew 1 leg pompon to top and 1 pompon to under side of each leg foundation. Sew 1 pompon to each side of tail, trim to shape legs and tail. Sew the 1 inch of body foundation back to body, place the head pompons on each side and sew in position. Sew 1 White pompon under head at neck, trim to shape head. If Black is used, sew 1 Black pompon at end of tail, 1 at one front leg, 1 at back of neck and 1 in the back. If Black is not used, make 4 extra White pompons. Trim and comb to fluff wool.

EARS. Ch 8, work 7 s c on ch, ch 1 to turn each row. 2nd Row—1 s c in each s c, then decrease 1 s c at the beginning of each row until 1 st remains, break yarn and work another ear in the same manner. If Black is used make Black Ears. See directions for Cat for embroidering mouth, sew buttons in for Eyes. Whiskers are cut in 3 ½ inch lengths. Sew Ears in position.

MITTENS. With Red "Dawn" Worsted Floss and a No. 2 needle ch 14, join, ch 1 and work 1 s c in each st of ch. Next 2 Rows—1 s c in each s c. 4th Row— 1 s c in each of the next 9 s c, ch 1, skip 4 s c for thumb, s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 8 s c, 1 s c in the ch 1 over thumb, then work 1 row even. Decrease 1 st in each row until 4 sts remain, break yarn, leaving an end. Thread into needle and draw together.

THUMB. Attach yarn and work 3 rows of s c even, break yarn leaving an end to draw together same as top of mitten.

CUFF. Attach yarn, ch 3, 2 d c in same space, ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 s c in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, * 3 d c in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 s c in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, repeat from * all around, break yarn and work another mitten in the same manner. Attach yarn at one front Paw, run yarn through Cuff of each mitten and attach to opposite paw.
