This free pattern originally published by Clark's O.N.T. in Old and New Favorites Doilies Book, Number 217, in 1944.


Runner measures 18 x 39 inches
Motif measures 3 inches in diameter.

Materials:

J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 2 balls of White or Ecru, or 3 balls of any color.

Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

Each motif measures about 3 inches in diameter.

First Motif . . . Starting at center, ch 2.

1st rnd: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st in 1st sc.

2nd rnd: Ch 5, * dc in next sc, ch 2. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-2 with sl st in 3rd st of starting chain (8 sps).

3rd rnd: Sl st in 1st sp, ch 5, holding back the last loop of each d tr on hook make 4 d tr in same sp, thread over hook and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made), * ch 10, holding back the last loop of each d tr on hook made d tr in next sp, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made) Repeat from * around, joining last ch-10 with sl st in top of 1st cluster. Break off.

Second Motif . . . Work 1st and 2nd rnds same as First Motif.

3rd rnd: Sl st in 1st sp, ch 5 and complete a cluster in same sp, ch 5, sc in a ch-10 loop in previous motif, ch 5, cluster in next sp on this motif, ch 5, sc in next ch-10 loop on previous motif, ch 5, cluster in next sp in this motif. Complete rnd with no more joinings. Break off.

Make 6 x 13 motifs, joining them as Second Motif was joined to First.

Fill-In-Lace . . . Ch 2.

1st rnd: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st in 1st sc.

2nd rnd: Ch 5, sc in any free loop between motifs, * ch 5, sl st in next sc on Fill-in-lace, ch 5, sc in next free loop between motifs. Repeat from * around. Break off. Fill in all sps between motifs in this way.

Edging . . . Attach thread in any ch-10 loop on outer edge of runner. In each ch-10 loop make 3 sc, ch 3, sc in 3rd ch from hook (p made), 3 sc, (ch 3, sc in 3rd ch from hook) 3 times (triple p made); 3 sc, p and 3 sc. In each ch-5 loop make 3 sc, p and 3 sc. Join and break off. Pin out to measurements given, brush lightly with starch and press.

i don't seem to understand the intsruction given for the third round of the 1st motif...after ch-10, how many d tr are you supposed to make into each space to make the cluster?

Looking at the picture, it looks like the table runner is 6 by 13 motifs, so you'd make a total of 78 (6 times 13) motifs and then join them.
