This free pattern originally published by Clark's O.N.T. in Old and New Favorites Doilies Book, Number 217, in 1944.

Place Mats measure 12 ½ x 16 ½ inches.
Runner measures 12 ½ x 24 inches.

Materials:

J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 3 balls of White or Ecru are sufficient for 2 Place Mats, each about 12 ½ x 16 ½ inches, and a runner, about 12 ½ x 24 inches.

Steel Crochet Hook No. 6 or 7.

Place Mat . . . Ch 139 to measure 15 inches.

1st row: Sc in 14th ch from hook, sc in next ch, * ch 6, skip 3 ch, tr in next 2 ch, ch 6, skip 3 ch, sc in next 2 ch. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 6, skip 3 ch, tr in last ch. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row: Sc in tr, * ch 6, sc in next 2 sc, ch 6, sc in next 2 tr. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 6, skip 6 sts of turning chain, sc in next ch. Ch 18, turn.

3rd row: * Skip next 2 sc, tr in next 2 sc, ch 14. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 14, skip next 2 sc, tr in last sc. Ch 1, turn.

4th row: Sc in 1st tr, * ch 6, skip 6 sts of next ch-14, sc in next 2 ch, ch 6, sc in next 2 tr. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 6, skip 6 sts of turning chain, sc in next 2 ch, ch 6, skip 6 more sts of turning chain, sc in next ch. Ch 7, turn.

5th row: Skip 1st sc, * ch 3, sc in next 2 sc, ch 3, tr in next 2 sc. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 3, tr in last sc. Ch 1, turn.

6th row: Sc in tr, * ch 3, sc in next 2 sc, ch 3, sc in next 2 tr. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 3, skip 3 ch, sc in next ch. Ch 10, turn.

7th row: * Sc in next 2 sc, ch 6, tr in next 2 sc, ch 6. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 6, tr in last sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd to 7th rows incl 4 more times; then repeat 2nd to 5th rows incl once more.

Now work Border as follows:

1st rnd: Ch 3, 4 dc in tr just made, * 3 dc in next sp, dc at ends of each of next 2 chains. Repeat from * across narrow edge of mat. Make 5 dc in corner, ** 3 dc in next sp, dc in same place as next 2 sc. Repeat from ** across wide edge of mat. Complete remaining edges to correspond. Join with sl st in 3rd st of starting chain.

2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in next dc, * 5 dc in next dc, dc in each dc across to center dc of next corner. Repeat from * around. Join.

3rd rnd: Ch 4, tr in 3 dc, ** make 5 tr in corner dc, tr in next 4 dc, * ch 6, skip 3 dc, sc in next 2 dc, ch 6, skip 3 dc, tr in next 2 dc. Repeat from * across to 7 sts from corner dc, skip 3 dc, tr in next 4 dc. Repeat from ** around, joining last ch-6 with sl st in 4th st of starting chain.

4th rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, sc in next 5 tr, ** 3 sc in corner tr, sc in next 6 tr, * ch 6, sc in next 2 sc, ch 6, sc in next 2 tr. Repeat from * across to next corner, sc in next 6 tr. Repeat from ** around. Join.

5th rnd: ** Sc in each sc to corner sc, in corner sc make sc, ch 5 and sc; sc in each sc to next chain, * sc in each ch, sc in 2 sc, sc in each ch, sc in next sc, ch 5, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across to next corner. Repeat from ** around. Break off.

Runner . . . Ch 89 to measure 10 inches. Work 1st to 7th rows incl same as Place Mat. Repeat 2nd to 7th rows incl 11 more times; then repeat 2nd to 5th rows incl once more. Work border same as Border of Place Mat. Starch, pin out to measurement and press.
