Place Doily . . . Starting at center, wind thread 10 times around forefinger. Slip strands off finger.

1st rnd: 32 sc in ring. Sl st in 1st sc made.

2nd rnd: Ch 5, skip 1 sc, dc in next sc, * ch 2, skip 1 sc, dc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, sl st in 3rd st of ch-5.

3rd rnd: Ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook, half dc in next ch, dc in next 7 ch, sc in next dc of 2nd rnd (a spoke made). Repeat from beginning of rnd, ending with sc at base of ch-10 first made (16 spokes in all).

4th rnd: Sl st to tip of 1st spoke, sc in tip of same spoke, * ch 7, sc in tip of next spoke. Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in 1st sc made.

5th rnd: Ch 5, dc in same place as sl st, * ch 3, sc in next sp, ch 3, in next sc make dc, ch 2 and dc (shell made). Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, sl st in 3rd st of ch-5.

6th rnd: Sl st in sp, ch 5, dc in same sp, * ch 4, sc in next sc, ch 4, make a shell in sp f next shell. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 4, sl st in 3rd st of ch-5 first made.

Work in this manner, making shell over shell and sc over sc, having 1 additional st in chain between sc’s and shell on each successive rnd, until there are 20 ch between sc’s and shells. Break off.

Centerpiece . . . Work as for Place Doily, but omit increases in ch’s on 10th and 12th rnds. When there are 18 ch’s work 7 rnds more, making 2 extra ch’s between sc’s and shells on each successive rnd (32 ch’s). Break off.

Bread and Butter Plate Doily . . . Work as for Place Doily to 9th rnd incl. Break off. Starch lightly and press.
