Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 7 or 8.

GAUGE … Motif measures about 5 inches square be­fore blocking. For a single size spread, about 69 x 105 inches, make 13 x 20 motifs. For a double size spread, about 90 x 105 inches, make 17 x 20 motifs.

MOTIF … Ch 7, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), 4 d c in ring, ch 2; (5 d c in ring, ch 2) 3 times; join to top of ch-3. 2nd rnd: S c in same place as sl st, * ch 5, s c in 3rd d c of 5-d c group; ch 5, s c in last d c of group, ch 9, s c in 1st d c of next 5-d c group. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5, tr in 1st s c. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, 2 d c in loop; * ch 3, s c in next loop, ch 5, s c in next loop, ch 3; in ch-9 loop make 3 d c, ch 3 (for corner) and 3 d c. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3; join. Fasten off. 4th rnd: Attach thread to a ch-5 loop, ch 5 (to count as d tr), in same loop make d tr, ch 5 and 2 d tr; * ch 7, s c in ch-3 at corner, ch 7, in next ch-5 loop make 2 d tr, ch 5 and 2 d tr. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-7 to top of 1st ch-5. 5th rnd: Ch 3, d c in back loop of next d tr, * d c in next 2 ch; in next ch make d c, ch 3 and d c; d c in next 2 ch, d c in back loop of next 2 d tr; ch 7, s c in ch-7 sp, s c in s c, s c in next ch-7 sp, ch 7, d c in back loop of next 2 d tr. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-6 to top of 1st ch-3. 7th rnd: Ch 3, d c in next 6 d c, * ch 2, d c in ch-3 sp, ch 2, d c in next 7 d c, ch 6, s c in next 5 s c, ch 6, d c in next 7 d c. Make necessary number of motifs, and sew together d c-groups and 5 sps at each corner, with neat over-and-over stitches on wrong side. Block to measure­ments given.
