Place mat measures 20 inches square including fringe.

MATERIALS:

J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 1 ball of Dark, 2 balls of Light and 1 ball of White.

Steel Crochet Hook No. 6 or 7.

Gauge: 10 dc make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

With White make a chain 25 inches long. 1st row: Holding Light along chain and working over it in order to conceal it, make dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 5 ch, thread over, insert hook in next ch and pull loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops, drop White, pick up Light and draw remaining 2 loops, thus changing color. * Now working over White in order to conceal it, make dc in next 8 ch, changing to White in the 8th dc. Working over Light make dc in next 8 ch, changing to Light in the 8th dc. Repeat from * until 11 White groups and 10 Light groups have been made and row measures about 17 inches. Cut off remain­ing chain. Ch 3, turn. Always work over unused color to con­ceal it and change color as de­scribed. 2nd and 3rd rows: Work White dc over White dc and Light dc over Light dc, ending with White dc in top st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. At end of 3rd row fasten off White and, with Light, ch 3, turn. 4th row: Holding Dark along top of previous row, work Light dc's over White dc's, changing to Dark in the last dc of group. Work Dark dc's over Light dc's and Light dc's over White dc's across. Ch 3, turn. 5th and 6th rows: Work Dark dc's over Dark dc's and Light dc's over Light dc's. At end of 6th row fasten off Dark, attach White, ch 3, turn. 7th row: Work White dc's over Light dc's and Light dc's over Dark dc's. Ch 3, turn. 8th and 9th rows: Work White dc's over White dc's and Light dc's over Light dc's. At end of 9th row fasten off White and with Light, ch 3, turn. Repeat 4th to 9th rows incl 9 more times. Piece should be square. Fasten off.

Fringe … Cut a strand 5 inches long. Double the strand, insert hook in a stitch and draw loop through; now draw ends through this loop and pull tightly. Make Light fringe along edge of Light squares and White fringe along edge of White squares. Trim fringe to measure 2 inches.
