CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, size 20:
Small Ball:
Clark's O.N.T.—15 balls,
or
J. & P. Coats—9 balls.
Big Ball:
J. & P. Coats—5 balls.
Steel crochet hook No. 9 or 10.

This amount of material is sufficient for a set consisting of a centerpiece, 16 inches in diameter; 4 place doilies, 12 inches in diameter; 4 bread and butter plate doilies, 6½ inches in diameter, and 4 glass doilies, 5 inches in diameter.

CENTERPIECE … Starting at center, ch 12. Join. 1st rnd: Ch 4, 21 tr in ring. Join with sl st to 4th st of ch-4. 2nd rnd: Ch 5, tr in same place as sl st, * ch 1, in next st make tr, ch 1 and tr. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1, sl st in 4th st of ch-5. 3rd rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4, * dc in next sp, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd st of ch-4. 4th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 5, * dc in next sp, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd st of ch-5. 5th rnd: Ch 6, dc in same place as sl st, * in next dc make dc, ch 3 and dc (shell made). Repeat from * around. Sl st in 3rd st of ch-6. 6th, 7th and 8th rnds: Sl st in next ch, sl st in sp, ch 6, dc in same sp, * in next ch-3 sp make dc, ch 3 and dc (shell). Repeat from * around. Join. 9th rnd: Sl st in next ch, sl st in sp, ch 6, dc in same sp, make 2 more shells as before (3 shells made), * ch 5, skip 1 shell, shell in next 3 shells. Repeat from * around (each 3-shell group is the base of a spoke; there are 11 spokes in all). 10th rnd: Work 3 shells over 3 shells having 2 additional sts in ch bars between shell groups. 11th rnd: Same as previous rnd, having 1 additional st on ch bars between shell groups. 12th to 23rd rnds incl: Repeat the 10th and 11th rnds alternately (26 sts in ch bars between shell group on 23rd rnd). 24th rnd: Same as 11th rnd (27 ch between shell groups). 25th rnd: Sl st across to sp of center shell of this group, ch 6, dc in same sp, * ch 43, in sp of center shell of next group make a shell as before. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-43 to 3rd st of ch-6 (this begins scalloped edge). 26th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 5, dc in same sp, * ch 1, in next (ch-43) sp make dc, ch 2 and dc; ch 17, working over the ch bar below, sc in center st of ch on 24th rnd, ch 17, in next sp make dc, ch 2 and dc; ch 1, in sp of next shell make dc, ch 2 and dc. Repeat from * around. Join.
   Hereafter shells will be made of dc, ch 2 and dc. 27th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 5, dc in same sp, ch 1, in sp of next shell make dc, ch 2 and dc; * ch 1, in next sp make dc, ch 2 and dc; ch 27, in next sp make dc, ch 2 and dc, (ch 1, shell in sp of next shell) 3 times. Repeat from * around. Join. 28th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 5, dc in same sp, (ch 2, shell in sp of next shell) twice; * ch 25, (shell in sp of next shell, ch 2) 4 times; shell in sp of next shell. Repeat from * around. Join. 29th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 5, dc in same sp, (ch 3, shell in next shell) twice; * ch 12, working over the ch bar below sc in center st of chain on 2nd rnd below, ch 12, (shell in next shell, ch 3) 4 times; shell in next shell. Repeat from * around. Join. 30th and 31st rnds: Same as 27th and 28th rnds respectively having ch-4 between shells; between scallops make ch 21 on 30th rnd and ch 19 on 31st rnd. 32nd rnd: Same as 29th rnd, having ch 5 between shells and ch 9 on both sides of the sc (between scallops). 33rd and 34th rnds: Same as 30th and 31st rnds, having ch 5 between shells on 33rd rnd and ch 6 on 34th rnd; between scallops make ch 16 on 33rd rnd and ch 15 on 34th rnd. 35th rnd: Same as 32nd rnd having ch 7 between shells and ch 7 on both sides of the sc between scallops. 36th and 37th rnds: Same as 33rd and 34th rnds, having ch 8 between shells on 36th rnd and ch 9 on 37th rnd; between scallops make ch 11 on 36th rnd and ch 9 on 37th rnd. 38th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 10, sc in 7th ch from hook, (ch 7, sc in same place as last sc) twice (triple p made); dc in same sp, (ch 10, dc in sp of next shell, ch 7, complete a triple p, dc in same sp) twice; * ch 7, working over the ch bar below, sc in center st of ch on 36th rnd, ch 7, (dc in sp of next shell, ch 7; complete a triple p, dc in same sp, ch 10) 4 times; dc in next sp, complete a triple p, dc in same sp. Repeat from * around. Join and fasten off.

PLACE DOILY (Make 4) … Starting at center, ch 10. Join. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 17 dc in ring. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3. 2nd to 7th rnds incl: Work as for Centerpiece. 8th to 17th rnds incl: Same as 9th to 18th rnds incl of Centerpiece (9 spokes). 18th rnd: Same as 25th rnd of Centerpiece making ch 35 (instead of 43). 19th rnd: Same as 26th rnd of Centerpiece, making ch 15 (instead of 17). 20th to 27th rnds incl: Same as 27th to 34th rnds incl of Centerpiece, having 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7 ch's respectively between shells. Between scallops make 23 ch for 20th rnd, 21 for 21st rnd, ch 10 on both sides of the sc on the 22nd rnd; ch 17 for 23rd rnd, ch 15 for 24th rnd, ch 7 on both sides of the sc on the 25th rnd, ch 12 for 26th rnd and ch 11 for 27th rnd. 28th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 10, sc in 7th ch from hook, (ch 7, sc in same place as last sc) twice (triple p made); dc in same sp, (ch 8, dc in next sp, ch 7, complete a triple p, dc in same sp) twice; * ch 5, working over the ch bar below, sc in center st of ch on 26th rnd, ch 5, (dc in sp of next shell, ch 7; complete a triple p, dc in same sp, ch 8) 4 times; dc in next sp, complete a triple p, dc in same sp. Repeat from * around. Join and fasten off.

BREAD AND BUTTER PLATE DOILY (Make 4) … Starting at center, ch 8. Join. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 13 dc in ring. Join. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in each dc around. Join (28 dc in rnd including starting ch). 3rd and 4th rnds: Same as 5th and 6th rnds respectively of Centerpiece. 5th to 10th rnds incl: Repeat 9th to 14th rnds incl of Centerpiece, having always 2 additional ch's between spokes on each successive rnd (7 spokes). 11th rnd: Same as 25th rnd of Centerpiece, making ch-25 (instead of ch-43). Shells of edging are also made of dc, ch-3 and dc on this piece and the Glass Doily. 12th rnd: Same as 26th rnd of Centerpiece, making ch-10 (instead of ch-17) on both sides of sc at center of scallops. 13th and 14th rnds: Repeat 27th and 28th rnds of Centerpiece, having ch-2 and ch-3 respectively between shells; between scallops make ch 9 for 13th rnd and ch 7 for 14th rnd. 15th rnd: Same as 38th rnd of Centerpiece having ch-5 between shells and ch-5 on both sides of sc between scallops. Fasten off.

GLASS DOILY (Make 4) … Starting at center, ch 8. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 19 dc in ring. Join. 2nd to 6th rnds incl: Repeat 3rd to 7th rnds incl of Bread and Butter Plate Doily having 3 additional ch's (instead of 2) between spokes on each successive rnd (5 spokes). 7th rnd: Same as 25th rnd of Centerpiece, having 21 (instead of 43) ch's. 8th rnd: Same as 26th rnd of Centerpiece making ch 7 (instead of ch 17). 9th, 10th and 11th rnds: Repeat the last 3 rnds of Bread and Butter Plate Doily. Fasten off.
   Starch lightly and block all pieces to measurements given.
